Job Description

Croom Medical is a leading orthopaedic manufacturing company providing cutting-edge medical device manufacturing technology. Established in 1984, we specialize in producing knee, hip, and shoulder implants on behalf of multinational customers. In addition, our offerings include a wide range of products such as Spine Screws and Acetabular cups, made using advanced DSLM technology (Additive Manufacturing) in materials such as Titanium, Stainless Steel and Tantalum.

Croom Medical is committed to pushing the boundaries of medical devices and their manufacturing with involvement in national and international research projects. Key areas of advancement are Additive Manufacturing, automation, and digitisation. There are several challenges, unknowns, and research questions within each topic of concern for Croom, its' customers, and research partners.

Croom is involved in two EU Horizon research projects, NOMAD and COGNIMAN, focused on the development of new dental implants, and automation for the Additive Manufacturing process chain respectively. Croom is also a partner in the SPRINT DTIF project focused on force monitoring in machining, and very active on the R&D of 3D printed tantalum in collaboration with Global Advanced Metals. More generally Croom's R&D is focused on digitalisation of its operations and increasing energy efficiency through a number of routes.

The primary purpose of the role is to help develop and conduct research on these projects, whilst developing your research skills and competences; including the process of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, along with the opportunity to develop your research network through EU collaborations. This position is intended for an engineer with a background in Additive Manufacturing and materials analysis, and an interest in industrial research and digitisation.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • Participate in team meetings on timeline projects
  • Interact professionally and effectively with national and international collaborators
  • Work as part of the research team to assist with analysis techniques
  • Assist with the smooth operation of the lab including writing risk assessments, monitoring spending, booking equipment, ordering suppliers etc.
Key Responsibilities and Duties

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and analyse of experiments
  • Use of laboratory equipment such as microscope, hall flow meter, and metallurgical preparation equipment
  • Use of design and preparation software such as Autodesk Inventor, Materialise Magics and nTopology
  • Assist in the building and prototyping of experimental rigs
  • Generation of technical reports, presentations, and assist in generation of academic publications
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by your manager
  • Engage in dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged, as directed by and with the support of your manager
  • Carry out administrative work associated with your program of research
  • All other duties as assigned.
Key Skills and Competencies

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineering
  • Good experience with CAD design software
  • Strong mechanical engineering skills
  • Strong communication skills with both internal and external agents
  • Self-starter with demonstrated efficient work methods, analytical & problem-solving skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • The individual should enjoy working in a dynamic and results motivated team
  • Experience in design, conducting and analysing experiments
  • Experience with prototyping and building mechanical systems
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including a proven ability to work to deadlines
  • PhD or Master's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineering or a closely related area
  • Demonstrated expertise in engineering design and/or medical device design
  • Experience in Additive and or subtractive Manufacturing, Automation and Design of Experiments
  • Demonstration of conducting research and contribution to publications
  • An understanding of the operational requirements for a successful research project
  • Evidence of research activity (publications, conference presentations, awards)
