Trust Doctor in Intensive Care Medicine

This 12 month clinical trust grade post in Leeds Teaching Hospitals provides comprehensive experience in all aspects of critical care medicine. The role is ideal for applicants wishing to gain tertiary centre experience in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) and to progress towards a full consultant qualification through either the national training programme or the CESR pathway.
LocationThe Critical Care Units are based at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James' University Hospital (SJUH). Together they provide over 80 critical care beds, with expansion plans.
Main DutiesThe post involves management of all aspects of patient care in the critical care environment as part of a multidisciplinary team. Duties include:
- Clinical management of adult and regional specialist patients (e.g. liver transplant, thoracic surgery, paediatric ICU).
- Provision of critical care ultrasound and advanced airway training.
- Participation in clinical audit, research, leadership, and teaching activities.
- Support for junior medical staff and advanced critical care practitioners.
Individual training blocks can be arranged in neuro intensive care, cardiac intensive care, anaesthesia, paediatric ICU and acute medicine, depending on availability. Each doctor will be assigned an experienced Educational Supervisor to plan their educational journey, and a limited study budget is available for suitable external training courses.
About UsLeeds Teaching Hospitals provide critical care across neuro intensive, cardiothoracic, general, and paediatric units. Regional expertise includes:
- Head and neck major cancer surgery
- Orthopaedic and plastic reconstructive surgery
- Paediatrics and paediatric intensive care
- Liver transplant and acute liver failure care
- Thoracic surgery, pancreatic surgery, haematology/oncology, infectious diseases
- Regional respiratory and renal services
The role supports senior non consultant grade doctors working at a level equivalent to advanced level trainees in ICM. Responsibilities include:
- Clinical leadership and decision making in the ICU.
- Teaching and supervision of trainees, junior doctors and nursing staff.
- Engagement in research projects and quality improvement initiatives.
- Night and weekend on call duties as per the junior doctor contract.
- Basic Medical Qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC Registration
- Experience in anaesthesia and/or critical care medicine or a suitable acute speciality
- High level clinical competence in critical care, including airway management and resuscitation
- Evidence of career progression and performance consistent with training period
- Strong communication skills - written, spoken and interpersonal
- Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity and hand eye coordination in medical procedures
- Proficiency in managing emergencies and in patients through work based assessments and portfolio evidence
- Experience working in multi professional teams and supervising junior staff
- Leadership and project management skills for audit and quality improvement projects
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- ALS and ATLS certification
- Primary FRCA or equivalent
- Fitness to practice is up to date and enables safe practice
- Demonstrates probity, honesty, integrity, ethical awareness and confidentiality
- Capacity to take responsibility for own actions
