At present, University Hospitals of North Midlands is unable to offer visa sponsorship for Band 2 to Band 4 roles, as these positions do not meet the minimum salary and skill thresholds required under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations.

As part of the transport team the post holder will provide an efficient and effective customer focused distribution service, engaging with clinical staff as well as the general public. Right first time and every time to all contracts including wards, patients, departments and areas within the University Hospital of North Staffordshire (NHS) Trust plus country wide sample runs (i.e Birmingham, London Sheffield etc). Transporting staff and equipment to different areas in and around UHNM sites.

This is achieved by working an agreed 17 week rota with varying schedules between the hours of 6am-9pm including covering bank holidays and weekends, which may change due to departmental changes (e.g covering sickness and annual leave). The post requires the individual to be flexible, motivated and able to work to clearly defined achievable, individual and team goals and any other duties to complete the tasks required of the Trust.

Main duties of the job
  • You will be placed on a 17 week roster, mainly Monday - Friday working within the hours of 6am-9pm.
  • You will be required to drive a range of vehicles from electric cars vans up to larger 3.5 tonne Lutons. We travel mainly around the Royal and County sites delivering and collecting stock, samples, notes and small objects, also moving larger items such as beds and cages full of stock.
  • We also travel nationally across the UK collecting stock and samples and move staff around the local area.

Job responsibilities
  • Hold and maintain a full clean Driving Licence plus CPC.
  • In-house vocational training will be provided as required (e.g. compactor training for emptying bins, tail lifts, ramps, different sized vehicles).
  • Provide a full range of distribution services to all contracts including wards, departments and areas within the Trust and other external customers/suppliers as required.
  • Cover a wide geographical area and include entry to patients' houses where they are unable to answer the door or have limited mobility/capacity - door lock codes are provided for entry to premises (e.g. hospices, care homes).
  • Provide a wait and return transport service (e.g. taking staff members to patient homes and returning them to site following completion of their job).
  • Collect, deliver and sign for pharmaceuticals and controlled drugs between sites (individually signing for all medication as a legal document).
  • Move valuable Trust items from and between sites (e.g. CDs, patient belongings, ResPECT forms, medical equipment such as beds, ultrasound machines).
  • Move general and clinical waste and offensive materials.
  • Abide by the Trust's Fleet & Transport Management Policy and Driver Code of Practice.
  • Abide by the Trust's Dignity at Work Policy whilst dealing with any member of staff, patient or member of the public.
  • Conform to all Trust policies and procedures including those relating to the Logistics Section - ensuring compliance with Trust Controls Assurance and Health & Safety legislation, promoting safe working practice and conforming to any relevant legislative and codes of practice.
  • Assist in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the service and help in the best use of resources by complying with service reviews.
  • Train new starters on routes as the 17 week rota will take time to learn.
  • Check all vehicles and equipment daily or prior to use, ensuring they are safe to use and record and report any defects.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment whilst on duty and immediately report all security breaches, adverse incidents and accidents to the supervisor.
  • Open and close the Transport site whilst out of the office and other areas where vehicles are held.
  • Assist with making cost savings by using resources as economically as possible as directed by the Trust.
  • Attend regular briefings with the Transport Department Supervisors and/or Manager.
  • Respond to all directions given to you within the agreed restrictions and timescale.
  • Develop and maintain a harmonious industrial relationship with all staff and representatives.
  • Take active responsibility for personal development reviews with Line Manager and attend any courses or training events appropriate to the job specification, division and/or Trust requirements to a recognised and achievable standard.
Person Specification Larger Vehicles
  • Full UK licence.
  • 2+ years experience driving 3.5 tonne vehicles.
Experience
  • 3+ years driving experience.
  • CPC.
Experience in local areas
  • Knowledge of local area routes.
  • National knowledge of routes.
