Job Description

University of the Arts London (UAL) is a world-leading creative university for teaching and research in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts. UAL is made up of six renowned colleges and hosts several institutes that further the university's mission and social purpose. Under the leadership of our new President and Vice-Chancellor, we are designing the University around social purpose; through the students and ideas we send out into the world, and the partnerships we build to achieve social, environmental, and economic progress.

Digital & Technology at UAL is on an exciting journey, transitioning from a 'classic' IT approach to a user-centred product approach to technology. We are investing in our people, and the processes enabled by digital, to evolve and transform the student and staff experience at UAL.

As Senior UX Designer, you will be instrumental in establishing and embedding UX, design, research, and accessibility standards across our teams. This role will sit within the Teaching & Learning Service in our Digital & Technology practice and will work closely with the UAL Online team.

You will create visual and descriptive representations of the user journey in our learning management system (LMS), Moodle, evolving designs and building prototypes that work within the constraints of the learning platform to iteratively deliver an outstanding online learning experience.

The role includes leading UX design services and enhancing existing products, whilst working closely with learning designers and educators to provide an excellent learning experience. This role will also be responsible for developing data-driven processes, ensuring UX effectiveness and alignment with agile methodologies, enabling the team to deliver value swiftly. The role will also be an active member in our design community in Digital and Technology, providing coaching and mentoring support to other members.

This is an 18-month fixed term contract

Experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge, experience, and passion for user-centred design, with expertise in a range of UX tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrable experience working on learning management system initiatives (preferably Moodle)
  • Extensive experience applying design thinking and UX methodologies across the full product life cycle.
  • Exceptional storytelling, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate research insights, user feedback, and data into actionable design solutions.
  • Ability to mentor and coach designers and uphold high-quality design standards within teams.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with senior stakeholders and multidisciplinary agile teams to deliver iterative, user-centered solutions at pace.

UAL is a world-class University shaping the creative industries worldwide, with staff having access to a range of benefits, training and personal development to recognise and reward the contributions they make, as well as to encourage excellence, creativity and diversity, including:

  • Competitive salary of £52,246 - £70,117 per annum, dependent on experience
  • 34 days annual leave plus public holidays
  • Generous, defined benefit pension scheme
  • Family-friendly policies, including 26 weeks of paid maternity or paternity leave
