Job Description

Dr Mirza & Partners has a vacancy for a fixed-term part time Prescribing Clerk to cover maternity leave for a minimum of 9 months. The period may be extended depending on the return date. Post starts July 2026.

We are looking for someone enthusiastic, highly motivated and with excellent organisation skills to join our friendly, forward thinking team.

The post is 25 hours per week, 5 hours per day Monday - Friday.

Main duties of the job

Ideal applicant must be enthusiastic, hard working, demonstrate good organisational and IT skills, and be able to multi task in a busy environment. A background in primary care or NHS administration is desirable, though training will be provided for the right candidate.

Job responsibilities
  • Process repeat prescriptions on a daily basis, ensuring compliance with the practice protocol and that prescriptions are ready for collection within 48 hours.
  • Ensure all current medication has relevant, current authorisations.
  • Promote cost effective prescribing by switching drugs to generic preparations when appropriate and encouraging the use of local ICB formulary medication choices.
  • Deal with prescription queries from a range of healthcare professionals including GPs, nurses, community pharmacists, nursing home staff and reception/administration staff.
  • Work closely with the prescribing administrator, read and act upon any relevant information published.
  • Add new patient medication, pass to a registered GP for approval highlighting any concerns, and liaise with the patient via phone call or letter.
  • Regularly update patients' INR results to ensure correct monitoring of warfarin and minimise the risk of adverse effects.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably requested.
  • Maintain quality within the practice, alerting team members to quality and risk issues, assessing performance, and suggesting improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, patients, carers and the ICB medication optimisation team, recognising alternative communication needs.
  • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance, discuss with the team how these affect work, and participate in audits where possible.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Practice Confidentiality Policy and the Data Protection Act, including during and after employment.
Special requirements of the post
  • Knowledge of medicines and drugs.

  • Understanding and adherence to strict confidentiality and compliance with the Data Protection Act.
  • Keyboard skills and computer literacy.

Person Specification Experience
  • Experience in a healthcare, pharmacy or clinical administration setting.
  • Experience processing prescriptions or working with patient medication records.
  • Experience liaising with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Experience working with electronic patient record systems and prescription software.
  • Previous exposure to quality assurance and audit processes within a healthcare setting.

Qualifications
  • GCSEs or equivalent, including English and Maths.
  • Training in medicines management or prescribing administration.
  • Knowledge of local Integrated Care Board (ICB) formulary and prescribing guidelines.
  • Basic healthcare or administrative qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 2/3 in Health Administration) or relevant experience.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong keyboard and IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and health care software systems.
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure while managing multiple priorities.
  • Competence in using own judgement, initiative and common sense to respond appropriately to patient requests and queries.
  • Knowledge of cost effective prescribing practices and generic medication switching.
  • Ability to analyse and act upon clinical and administrative information from external sources (e.g. ICB guidance).
  • Understanding of medicines and drugs, including monitoring requirements for medications such as warfarin.
