Clinic / Hospital Surgery Manager Job Summary:

We are recruiting for an experienced Clinic / Hospital Surgery Manager to take ownership of the operational delivery of surgical services within a busy ophthalmic clinic or hospital. This is a leadership role responsible for the planning, preparation and execution of all surgical lists, ensuring safe, efficient and high-quality patient care throughout every stage of the surgical pathway.

Working closely with senior management and clinical teams, you will lead theatre and peri-operative staff, optimise patient flow, maintain regulatory compliance and drive continuous improvement across surgical operations. Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full operational ownership of all surgical list planning, preparation and delivery.
  • Lead daily surgery team briefings and act as the main point of contact for the multidisciplinary surgical team.
  • Ensure safe, efficient and compliant delivery of all surgical sessions.
  • Maintain smooth patient flow and achieve agreed service time targets.
  • Lead theatre, peri-operative and surgical support teams to deliver outstanding patient care.
  • Ensure all consumables, intraocular lenses (IOLs), laser treatment cards, equipment and clinical documentation are prepared ahead of each surgical list.
  • Monitor theatre utilisation, productivity and operational performance, implementing improvements where required.
  • Ensure compliance with all clinical governance, infection prevention and regulatory standards.
  • Lead incident reporting, clinical audits and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Escalate operational risks and resolve day-of-surgery challenges promptly.
  • Support regulatory inspections and maintain inspection readiness.
  • Act as Registered Manager where required, ensuring compliance with CQC, HIS, HIW or RQIA standards.
  • Deputise for the Clinic or Hospital Manager on surgery-related operational matters.
  • Team Development:
  • Lead, motivate and develop theatre and peri-operative teams.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and competency development.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage professional development and succession planning across the surgical team.
  • Foster a patient-first culture with a strong focus on safety and service excellence.
  • About You:
  • Previous experience managing surgical services, theatres or clinical operations within a healthcare environment.
  • Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced surgical setting.
  • Committed to delivering exceptional patient care and maintaining high clinical standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to make confident decisions under pressure.
  • Experience monitoring KPIs and driving operational improvements.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Professional, organised and committed to maintaining confidentiality and integrity.

Desirable:

  • Experience within ophthalmology, day surgery or theatre management.
  • Previous Registered Manager experience with CQC, HIS, HIW or RQIA.
  • Experience improving theatre productivity and patient flow.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, audit processes and regulatory inspections.
