About the Role

Our client HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice.

HMCTS provides administrative support for the legal system across England and Wales, ensuring justice works for everyone.

Our justice system defends our fundamental rights and freedoms. It is a cornerstone of our modern society and must serve all those who call on it - from the most vulnerable people to families in crisis, claimants and commercial businesses. HMCTS has a responsibility to administer a justice system that is accessible to everyone and operates efficiently.

This role invites a court usher to join the busy team on a temporary basis, until the end of June 2026 initially, with possible extension.

Work Details

Location: Derby City Centre - an opportunity to work within the courts and gain experience.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, 37 hours per week.

Pay: £12.21 per hour for the first 12 weeks, increasing to £12.95 per hour thereafter. Benefits include holiday pay and a pension scheme.

Responsibilities
  • Greeting members of the public.
  • Liaising with judiciary, witnesses, jurors and other court users with professionalism.
  • Performing basic admin duties, data entry, dealing with queries and preparing juror packs for trials.
  • Walking jurors to and from court whilst remaining socially distanced.
  • Preparing court rooms.
  • Providing support to all users of the courts, especially those who may be experiencing it for the first time.
  • Filing and other post room duties.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Good basic administrative experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in potentially difficult situations.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
