Job overview

TfL's vision is to be a strong, green heartbeat for London. Our Sustainability Strategy and Corporate Environment Plan guide environmental, social and economic sustainability, with a goal to be Net Zero by the end of the decade. The Engineering & Asset Strategy Directorate delivers TfL's sustainability ambitions across multiple transport modes, with collaboration across TfL, customers, local government, suppliers, consultants and contractors.

Your work will be multi-disciplinary, spanning environment and social sustainability, and will contribute to city-defining programmes and transformational change.

What will I be doing?

Your graduate programme will include placements lasting 3-6 months across TfL and the Engineering & Asset Strategy Directorate, plus short placements in maintenance and operations to understand end-user impact. You will choose placements guided by your scheme sponsor, chartership mentor and development adviser, with opportunities for placements outside Engineering to broaden experience.

Placements may be arranged externally (e.g., Department for Transport, contractors). The aim is to build the skills to pursue Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist status while starting your TfL career.

Paths align with Engineering institutions on your application:

  • IET - emphasis on systems, electrical, electronic, communication or control systems engineering
  • IMechE - emphasis on mechanical engineering and materials
  • ICE - emphasis on civil and structural engineering

All graduates will undertake a range of placements providing broad exposure to TfL environment and sustainability work.

Qualifications & training

On completion, you will be on track to become a Chartered Engineer with your chosen institution and a Chartered Environmentalist with your chosen institution or ISEP, plus online and in-person training opportunities. You will receive ongoing mentoring and development support.

Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL's work ethos.

Career progression

On completion, you are expected to move into the Environment & Sustainability Engineering team or other TfL engineering teams, with increasing responsibility over five years and potential progression to Chartered Engineer and Environmentalist statuses. Graduates may move into management roles on national projects or lead discipline teams.

Support & development

On-the-job placements, classroom and online training, mentoring, and structured networking with alumni. Roles include:

  • Placement manager - day-to-day management and development support
  • Scheme sponsor - senior manager and technical adviser
  • Chartership Mentor - guidance toward Chartered Engineer/Environmentalist status
  • Buddy - peer support
  • Development adviser - career coaching
What we look for

Core values: Caring, Open, Adaptable. We seek candidates who are:

  • Caring about colleagues, customers and work
  • Open to ideas and collaboration
  • Adaptable to diverse needs and innovation

If you want to influence London's future, develop as a multi-disciplinary engineer, and contribute to addressing climate and ecological emergencies, this is the Graduate Scheme for you.

Application process

The application process comprises 5 steps, including online assessments. Read this document to familiarise yourself with the process. If you already hold qualification certificates, upload copies; if you sit final exams or need to replace certificates, provide them at a later stage. You will receive guidance at each assessment stage. Expect emails with deadlines; one week to complete online assessments. Some assessment centres will be in December-January, with in-person and virtual options depending on role.

We are a disability-confident employer and guarantee an interview to disabled candidates who meet essential criteria. Please let us know if you require reasonable adjustments for any stages of the application.
