Job Description

As Director of R&D, you will be the driving force behind our growing Dutch scientific team and serve as the key bridge between technical execution and executive strategy. Reporting to the part-time CSO and working closely with all C-level executives, you'll lead and scale a multidisciplinary R&D team, translating vision into structured, actionable development plans.



Key Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on leadership to a team of 4 PhDs specializing in protein engineering and biophysics.
  • Align research goals with company strategy through close collaboration with the UK & US based executive team.
  • Translate high-level concepts into clear, prioritized technical roadmaps.
  • Cultivate a results-driven, collaborative, and inclusive R&D environment.
  • Navigate multicultural dynamics with sensitivity and effectiveness.
  • Represent the Dutch R&D team to stakeholders and contribute to cross-functional planning and decision-making.
  • Contribute to strategic discussions on product development and scientific direction.

Candidate Profile

Must-Haves:

  • PhD in Protein Engineering, Chemistry, Biophysics, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of relevant industry experience in biotech or life sciences.
  • Previous experience as an R&D Director or equivalent senior leadership role.
  • Deep expertise in protein engineering, single-molecule work, or analytical protein biochemistry.
  • Proven track record of people management and technical program leadership.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience in early-stage or high-growth biotech environments.
  • Practical experience with analytical software and tools used in protein research (training can be provided).
  • Exposure to both academic and commercial R&D settings.
