Job Description
As Director of R&D, you will be the driving force behind our growing Dutch scientific team and serve as the key bridge between technical execution and executive strategy. Reporting to the part-time CSO and working closely with all C-level executives, you'll lead and scale a multidisciplinary R&D team, translating vision into structured, actionable development plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on leadership to a team of 4 PhDs specializing in protein engineering and biophysics.
- Align research goals with company strategy through close collaboration with the UK & US based executive team.
- Translate high-level concepts into clear, prioritized technical roadmaps.
- Cultivate a results-driven, collaborative, and inclusive R&D environment.
- Navigate multicultural dynamics with sensitivity and effectiveness.
- Represent the Dutch R&D team to stakeholders and contribute to cross-functional planning and decision-making.
- Contribute to strategic discussions on product development and scientific direction.

Candidate Profile
Must-Haves:
- PhD in Protein Engineering, Chemistry, Biophysics, or related field.
- 5-10 years of relevant industry experience in biotech or life sciences.
- Previous experience as an R&D Director or equivalent senior leadership role.
- Deep expertise in protein engineering, single-molecule work, or analytical protein biochemistry.
- Proven track record of people management and technical program leadership.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience in early-stage or high-growth biotech environments.
- Practical experience with analytical software and tools used in protein research (training can be provided).
- Exposure to both academic and commercial R&D settings.
