Conflicts and their resolution strategies have always been a focus of Romani studies. Romani group anthropology has examined this topic from various perspectives, incorporating theories and methodologies from anthropology of law. Initially, legal anthropologists studied the Roma's conflict resolution strategies as segments of unwritten codes (commonly known as customary laws) independent of standard state law. Later, further anthropological insights distinguished between legal/formal and non-legal/informal strategies. A post-colonial interpretation has shifted focus from legal norms to the political recognition of non-state legal systems.

This conference revisits the historical debate on conflict resolution strategies among Roma, adding new insights into the continuum of strategies and their levels of formality. It explores relationships within Roma communities, between different Roma groups, and between Roma and non-Roma societies. Key questions include: What constitutes the resolution of an interindividual conflict? How do interindividual conflicts relate to inter-community conflicts? How do political ideologies influence these conflicts?

The conference is organized by Grégoire Cousin, Giorgia Decarli, and Stefania Pontrandolfo for the Centre for Ethnographic Research and Applied Anthropology "Francesca Cappelletto" (Department of Human Sciences, University of Verona).
