Commercial General Manager - Precision Engineering

Location: UK - West Yorkshire
Reporting to: Board of Directors
Salary: £80,000+ benefits

The Company

A long-established precision engineering and high-value gear manufacturing business operating at the premium end of its market. Its reputation has been built on technical excellence, reliability and an engineering-led approach to solving complex customer problems.

The company supplies demanding industrial sectors including Automotive OEMs, Aerospace, Defence, Oil & Gas and Industrial Equipment, supporting global customers with complex, value-engineered components. The business is known not simply for machining capability, but for its ability to engage technically, manage complexity and deliver consistently against exacting specifications.

Operating across the UK and China, the organisation combines advanced CNC machining (turning, milling, shaping and grinding), in-house engineering and design capability, robust inspection and metrology, and strong process control. With a workforce of around 80 people, this is a hands on, high expectation environment where leadership is visible, accountable and close to the detail.

The business is entering its next phase of development, with clear opportunity to grow the order book, deepen customer relationships and further leverage its UK and China footprint. The focus now is on strengthening commercial performance alongside operational discipline, without compromising the company's engineering ethos or reputation for quality.

The Role

The General Manager will play a key role in leading the business through its next stage of growth. Reporting directly to the Board, the role combines commercial leadership with operational accountability.

Working closely with the current General Manager, the successful candidate will oversee production and operations while driving new customer engagement and sales development. This is a highly visible, hands on role suited to someone comfortable operating on the shop floor, in customer meetings and at board level.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading day to day operations across UK and China sites, ensuring consistent standards and performance
• Full P&L ownership, delivering profitable growth and disciplined cost control
• Acting as a credible, technically knowledgeable point of contact for demanding OEM and Tier 1 customers
• Driving operational excellence across production planning, scheduling, quality, MRP discipline and supply chain coordination
• Supporting capacity planning, workflow optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives
• Developing new customer relationships and expanding the order book while protecting margin and delivery performance
• Leading, developing and engaging a highly skilled engineering and manufacturing team

The role requires a confident, decisive leader who can balance commercial ambition with operational rigour in a small, technically complex business environment.

The Ideal Candidate

This opportunity will suit a commercially minded General Manager or senior operational leader with strong engineering credibility.

You are likely to have:

• A background in machining, metal cutting, mechanical or manufacturing engineering
• Experience within precision engineering, CNC machining or gear manufacturing environments
• A track record in customer facing roles within high value industrial markets
• Strong operational capability, including production planning, scheduling, MRP/ERP systems and quality control
• Sound financial understanding, including P&L management, budgeting and investment decision making
• Exposure to multi site or international operations, ideally including China or offshore manufacturing
• A hands on, engaging leadership style with the presence to influence customers, teams and board stakeholders
