Caseworker - Firearms Licensing Unit

Fixed term 12 months

The main purpose of the role is to provide a case management and file building function in relation to issue of firearm/shotgun certificates ensuring continuity of support and compliance with Force and legislative standards for the firearms licensing process and handle all correspondence in relation to those cases.

Main Responsibilities
  • Process and manage all incoming and outgoing correspondence, ensuring timely handling of post, applications, and routine enquiries.
  • Update, analyse and interrogate Force IT records and intelligence systems in line with Force policy, Management of Police Information (MoPI), and national guidelines.
  • Process all grant and renewal applications for firearm and shotgun certificates, including updating NFLMS with application details, photographs and fees, and preparing and dispatching renewal reminders, forms and associated documentation.
  • Complete all necessary criminal and intelligence checks using Force databases (including Athena and PNC) to support the assessment and progression of applications.
  • Make an initial assessment of threat, harm and vulnerability, grading each incident in accordance with current guidelines and Force procedures.
  • Conduct enquiries and obtain statements by telephone where appropriate to support decision-making and case progression.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the nature, level of responsibility and grading of the post, as required.
Person Specification Experience
  • Previous experience of administration processes
  • Experience of gathering and collating information using appropriate questioning techniques and creating and maintaining accurate records
  • Experience as working as part of a team in a customer service environment, managing a high and varied work load
Key Skills
  • Proven ability to communicate both orally and in written form with a wide range of people
  • Competent in the use of IT, including Microsoft packages
  • Proven ability to work under pressure towards deadlines
  • Ability to read and understand complex instructions
