Primary Purpose of Position

The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee and manage the Grounds team, which comprises 12-14 full-time employees, along with contracted staff as needed. This role covers the grounds services for the approximately 300-acre campus and includes scheduling and providing day to day assignments that center around providing an outdoor space that is conducive to a higher education setting.

Job Description

Supervisory responsibilities for the maintenance campus grounds areas on the UNCP Campus as well as satellite locations. Provide institutional services support for State agencies and universities in the areas of building environmental service, grounds keeping. Employees perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and cleaning of grounds areas around athletic fields, dormitories, offices, welcome centers, and other state buildings, work is guided by a daily schedule for general assignments. Work is performed subject to close review and inspection, with problems and special assignments not covered by instructions referred to a supervisor. Duties may include physically strenuous activities such as moving operating heavy equipment, and delivering large quantities of grounds keeping supplies and equipment. Work is routine and repetitive in nature and may require strenuous physical exertion. Maintaining the operating inventory through physical counts and creating supply lists for facilities is also part of the role. Ensuring all grounds-related equipment is operated safely and properly, and reporting concerns and needs to the Grounds Manager, is crucial. The Building Environmental Services Supervisor works closely with the Grounds Manager, Facilities Superintendent, Assistant Director, and Director of Operations on various projects related to budget, tasks, and other items impacting the campus community.

Responsibilities
  • This position performs coverage for short-staff situations, as well as event coverage during and outside normal campus business hours.
  • This position is designated as Mandatory Personnel: an employee whose presence has been determined to be essential to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.
Requirements

Minimum of 10 years of horticulture or grounds experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Pesticide License preferred. Experience supervising grounds or landscaping staff in a campus or similar setting. Knowledge of turf management, irrigation, arboriculture, and general grounds maintenance. Skilled in staff training, performance evaluation, and personnel management. Strong communication, leadership, and problem solving abilities. Ability to oversee operations, budgets, and ensure compliance with safety and university policies.
