Behaviour Support Assistant

A specialist school in Wigan is seeking a Teaching Assistant specialising in SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) to support students in their learning. The role involves working with secondary aged children who have SEMH needs as well as autism, ADHD and other learning difficulties. Class sizes are small - 4 to 6 pupils - and the school is narrower than the national average with around 25 pupils.
Working HoursMonday to Thursday, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm; Friday, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm. The position will begin in April 2026 and may lead to a permanent role for the right applicant.
Pay£14.25 per hour, increasing with experience.
Key Responsibilities- Support students with their learning.
- Provide a reliable, resilient and supportive presence in the classroom.
- Implement behaviour management and de escalation techniques.
- Work 1 1 with pupils as relationships develop.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding requirements in schools.
- High expectations of student behaviour and clear strategies for working with challenging behaviour.
- Experience working with children with SEND and SEMH needs.
- Experience working with children (ideally in a school setting) or vulnerable adults with SEND or SEMH needs.
- Understanding of behaviour management and de escalation techniques.
- Strong work ethic and full time availability.
- Ability to reliably commute to Wigan INDLIV.
