North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - Bank position: Epilepsy Nurse Specialist. The closing date is 14 October 2025.
Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition that can affect anyone, at any age and from any walk of life and affects around one in every 100 people in the UK. The consequences of an epilepsy diagnosis can be severe and wide reaching, including potential loss of a driving licence, loss of employment, and impacts on education and social isolation. The Epilepsy Specialist Nurse role would involve promoting and leading good practice in the diagnosis, management and treatment of adults with epilepsy, providing a seamless, high quality service with support, advice and education to patients, their families and carers. The post holder would work in collaboration with the wider Multidisciplinary Team involved in epilepsy and maintain their own continuing professional development.
Main duties of the job- Provide and manage an expert specialist nursing service for adults with epilepsy.
- Develop, organise and manage nurse led clinics for adults with epilepsy across Cumbria.
- Provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through treatment.
- Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based nursing care by assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers and initiating appropriate steps for effective care.

- Standard DBS check £21.50
- Enhanced DBS check £49.50 plus any admin costs
The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children; if the post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended) the successful candidate(s) will be subject to a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows, if applicable to the post:
- Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over the following 3 months.
- Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over the following 3 months.

- Higher Degree (MSc) or equivalent in a health related subject, or working towards
- Strong Leadership skills
- Expert clinical skills relevant to nursing care for adult patients with epilepsy
- Experience in Neurology/Epilepsy Setting
- Neurology Training
- 300 Nurse prescribing certificate
- Nurse Prescribing Certificate
- Knowledge of risk assessment and management procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to build up a rapport with patients and the MDT
- Experience in providing counselling to clients/carers
- Relevant, demonstrable experience in specialty area
- Ability to impart complex information to patients, relatives and carers with different levels of understanding
- Ability to undertake and promote evidence based practice
- Ability to lead, co ordinate and motivate
- Ability to work autonomously or as part of a multi disciplinary team
- Ability to chair and facilitate meetings
- Computer literacy; basic counselling skills; experience of delivering presentations
- Knowledge of Vulnerable Adults Procedures and Adults under Mental Capacity Act
- Mentoring of junior members of staff and students
- Advanced clinical assessment skills or willingness to develop these
- Proven experience of service development
- Experience of running research and audit programmes
- To be flexible regarding early/late appointment times as necessary
- Ability to travel around Cumbria and distances out of the Cumbrian area
- Full Driving License
