Job Description
Women's Health Physiotherapist

We seek a motivated and innovative individual with strong communication and problem solving skills. Candidates must have previous NHS physiotherapy experience either as an undergraduate or postgraduate to be eligible to apply for this post. We would also consider a Band 5 developmental role for the right candidate; a tailored development plan, regular supervision and relevant training will be provided, with progression to Band 6 upon meeting agreed competencies and objectives.

Main duties of the job
  • To act as specialist clinician for the Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Service, supporting the clinical lead with evolving and embedding best practice into the clinical area.
  • To manage own specialist caseload in this area.
  • Work autonomously within Trust policies and professional practice, maintaining accurate and comprehensive up to date records.
  • To carry out specialist assessment and treatment of Women's Health patients in an outpatient clinic setting, and contributing to MDT aims.
  • Determine a clinical diagnosis, develop, deliver, implement, evaluate and modify individualised treatment programmes and/or provide specialist advice, ensuring appropriate pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies as required.
  • To provide education/deliver classes to patients as part of the Perinatal Pelvic Health Service.
  • To deliver classes for routine pelvic health patients, and pre op patients.
  • Take part in the education and training of Physiotherapists and qualified and non qualified healthcare/social services/education staff including medical staff.
  • To support the Clinical Leads/ Team Leader in the day to day running of the Pelvic Health therapy team.
  • To support and advise within the wider MDT on the delivery of the service.
Job responsibilities
  • Work within the Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Service, developing effective clinical interventions and contributing to clinical practice in line with current evidence.
  • Manage autonomously a clinical workload of patients/clients at a specialist level, assessing and treating patients and maintaining clinical records.
  • Utilise specialist assessment and treatment skills in musculoskeletal problems in pregnancy and gynaecological problems including urinary and faecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Apply evidence based knowledge within the specialist clinical area acquired through experience and academic study at a postgraduate level.
  • Act as a resource and provide advice to Physiotherapists, other professionals and MDT colleagues about assessment, treatment, management and care of patients/clients with multi pathological illness and complex psychosocial needs.
  • Work collaboratively with health and social care community and acute colleagues.
  • Coordinate care pathways and transfer of care/discharge with other MDT members.
  • Facilitate seamless transfer of care and continuing therapeutic management of Women's Health patients between care settings.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary work within the MDT, debating blurred boundaries across professions and assuming competence where appropriate.
  • Develop specialist programmes of assessment, treatment and intervention for Women's Health patients in the acute hospital setting.
  • Prioritise own clinical workload efficiently, delegating according to training and competency levels of team members to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Participate in the daily supervision process for staff and students as required.
  • Ensure a high standard of patient care, implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work undertaken.
  • Provide specialist assessment and advice for the MDT and actively participate in MDT meetings.
  • Run face to face and virtual classes as per service requirements.
  • Work across a 7 day therapy service, including weekends and bank holidays (may include respiratory on call service).
Person Specification Qualifications / Training
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Previous NHS physiotherapy experience as an undergraduate or post graduate level
  • Evidence of postgraduate training
  • Evidence of pelvic health postgraduate training
  • Clinical educator training
  • Member of a professional body
  • Studied at master's level or equivalent
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
  • Knowledge of requirements for appropriate consent for intimate examinations
  • Awareness of the management of complex psychosocial issues in Women's health
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people with complex difficulties and in difficult situations
  • Good clinical reasoning skills
  • Evidence of reflective practice
  • Evidence of relevant training and maintenance of best practice
  • Awareness of relevant legislation, local and national initiatives specific to role
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Critical appraisal skills
  • Ability to maintain legible and accurate records
  • Teaching/presentation skills (e.g., presenting in service training)
  • Experience developing others
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal problems in obstetric patients in an outpatient setting
  • Experience running classes for patients within a physiotherapy setting
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of gynaecological outpatients, with problems such as urinary and faecal incontinence
  • Experience in vaginal examination for pelvic floor dysfunction problems, and completion or work towards completion of the necessary formal training
  • Attendance at relevant special interest groups
