Role Summary

An associate pastor is a member of the clergy who assists the pastor or priest with serving the needs of the congregation. The term pastor is typically used in Christian communities. Associate pastors may serve one or more communities, and can be full time or part time. Their wages or expenses are paid from parish funds.

Responsibilities
  • Lead mid week services, stepping in for a sick or absent pastor.
  • Deliver sermons and perform religious ceremonies such as baptisms, wedding services, funerals, and communion.
  • Assist with administrative duties, including paperwork and office tasks.
  • Coordinate with musicians and ushers to ensure smooth worship services.
Qualifications
  • Ordained minister with formal religious instruction from a denomination specific seminary or a college/university.
  • In Roman Catholic tradition, a minimum of eight years of training; other denominations have comparable requirements.
  • Capability to serve multiple parishes within a diocese if required.
