Job Description
The Role:

The Asset Operations function forms the cornerstone of service delivery to customers, protecting the environment and meeting regulatory standards while managing the majority of operational expenditure. The function is responsible for operational and maintenance strategy, policies, planning and standard operating procedures for Water and Wastewater operations nationwide and regionally, ensuring value for money and high quality customer service.

The O&M team delivers national water and wastewater operational services through the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of treatment and network assets. The Regional O&M Team manages regional operations, including the delivery of water and wastewater services, operation of treatment and network assets, and supervision of maintenance and repair activities while managing health and safety.

Reporting to the Water Treatment Team Operations Lead, the Water Treatment Operator supervises a geographical area, operating treatment processes at assigned plants and carrying out routine maintenance activities as required. The role is based at Ballyboden Plant, an operation running 24/7/365. Working hours follow a shift rotation pattern, with 8 hour shifts covering day and night. A shift premium is provided in addition to base salary.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the operation of water treatment processes and carry out routine maintenance across a varied plant asset base.
  • Operate and maintain assigned assets, including controlling, adjusting, inspecting, monitoring, testing, calibrating equipment, replenishing consumables, and maintaining assets.
  • Operate the water network, including secondary treatment points, to deliver consistent customer service and perform routine maintenance.
  • Conduct asset checks and inspections to identify and resolve problems early, raising work orders on Maximo where required. Use electronic equipment such as handheld units, PCs, Lone Working App.
  • Check, record and monitor all necessary quality parameters.
  • Conduct daily indicative operational checks and analyses, reporting results through appropriate systems.
  • Respond to SCADA/telemetry alerts according to standards and procedures.
  • Support implementation of process optimisation recommendations to improve treatment performance or deliver efficiencies.
  • Promptly record and accurately report relevant information related to water treatment using provided technology systems.
  • Meter reading as required.
  • Maintain stocks of materials and chemicals, ensuring re order when necessary.
  • Support Customer Contact Centre with any customer issues/queries.
  • Maintain onsite critical spare stocks, tools and equipment.
  • Ensure mechanical, electrical and control plant and equipment is in good condition, operating effectively and efficiently in accordance with all technical instructions and manuals.
  • Take water/wastewater samples before and after treatment, perform laboratory analyses as set out in technical manuals and record results.
  • Supervise all maintenance and repair work, ensuring proper execution and satisfactory completion.
  • General maintenance of sewers, rising mains, storm overflows, pump chambers, treatment plants and sites, including fences, gates, buildings and ancillary facilities.
  • Be present during new connections if required.
  • Maintain interiors and exteriors of all treatment works and pumping stations in a clean, tidy condition.
  • Support in the operation of newly commissioned/upgraded assets, including undertaking relevant training.
  • Participate in out of hours and standby working as required.
  • Ensure compliance with work safety procedures and participate in safety programmes; use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Perform duties under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, including construction regulations, site risk assessments, safe work procedures, health safety training, PPE use, site welfare facilities, control and recording of access, cooperation with Uisce Éireann personnel and external service providers, record accidents, incidents and near misses, corrective actions, safety file updates, and ECM system updates.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders across the Uisce Éireann business.
  • Promote and deliver health and safety commitments across Uisce Éireann and its supply chain, reinforcing positive behaviours and meeting industry highest standards.
  • Support the delivery of the Uisce Éireann Transformation Programme, driving required results and organisational objectives.
  • Conduct duties in accordance with Uisce Éireann Information Security policies, standards, processes and controls to protect confidentiality, integrity and availability of business information and critical services, complying with NIS Directive and other cybersecurity regulations.
  • Other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Secondary level education or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Experience within a strong health & safety culture.
  • Basic knowledge of water and wastewater systems and practices.
  • Strong problem solving skills and initiative to resolve issues promptly.
  • Strong literacy skills.
  • Valid Irish Category B driving licence (clean driving record). Additional categories an advantage.
  • Certification in Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations preferred.
  • Water Services Training Group qualification preferred.
  • Plumbing or Electrical skills or training desirable.
  • Experience in the Water Industry or other utilities preferred.
  • Experience with automated control systems such as SCADA.
  • Experience with instrumentation servicing and maintenance for automatic process control.
  • Experience working in environments requiring ear protection, hazardous chemicals handling, confined space entry.
  • Minimum 1 year's experience in a similar role is advantageous but not essential.
  • Proactive, able to work on own initiative and with others to achieve team success.
  • Effective time management, prioritisation and focus.
  • Proven ability to develop good working relationships and gain commitment from others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with clear, concise messaging.
  • Ability to set up ongoing processes and procedures to collect and review information.
  • Adaptable to changing environments and willing to adjust new work structures, processes and requirements.
  • Commitment to quality and high standards of work.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
