The role
A video baseband engineer is a specialist who works with the unmodulated, raw video and audio signals (baseband signals) within broadcast, live event, or communications systems. They are crucial for ensuring the quality, transmission, and processing of multimedia content. This role often overlaps with a general broadcast engineer or video engineer position.
Key responsibilities
Equipment Management: Setting up, operating, and maintaining specialist video and audio equipment, including cameras, switchers, monitors, and transmission links.
Signal Processing: Handling the digital processing, encoding/decoding (eg, H.264, HEVC), and packaging of video and audio signals into various formats for transmission or on-demand services.
System Integration: Installing and testing new hardware and software facilities, and integrating traditional baseband systems with modern IP-based and cloud-based technologies.
Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving technical faults on equipment and systems quickly, especially during live broadcasts, to minimise service loss.
Quality Control: Monitoring video and audio feeds to ensure optimal quality and adherence to industry standards and regulations (eg, Ofcom in the UK).
Collaboration: Working closely with producers, directors, and other technical staff to ensure a seamless production process.
Core skills, knowledge and experience required
Strong knowledge of analogue and digital systems, IP video, audio/video signal flow, codecs, and file formats is essential.
Practical, hands-on experience with relevant equipment and in the industry is highly valued. Many start in trainee or assistant roles.
