Veterinary Surgeon - Equine
Posted 1 day 5 hours ago by British Veterinary Association
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team at Churchfield Equine Clinic. Do you want to work with clinical freedom and under your own initiative whilst still having the backup of experienced vets and certificate holders?
Location:
We are based in the glorious rolling Pennines near Penistone South Yorkshire. Not far from the busy city of Sheffield, we are 5 minutes from the M1 motorway yet rural enough to enjoy the relaxation and leisure facilities on our doorstep; the Trans-Pennine trail is nearby with numerous reservoirs and hill walks to enjoy.
The Practice:
Churchfield Equine Clinic is a 3.5 FTE equine practice. Although we are part of a mixed brand, the equine clinic has recently rebranded, and all vets at the clinic are exclusively equine. Our facilities include six inpatient stables, a large barn and workup area, theatre and recovery box. We perform our own routine surgeries as needed, supported by experienced anaesthetists; our clinical director holds a certificate in soft tissue surgery.
The clinic has recently undergone refurbishment to our lunge arena, trot-up facilities, barn, theatre, and recovery box. We have ambitious plans to upgrade further to provide our clients with the best service. We have grass paddocks for turnout of inpatients as required.
The Role:
The role is first opinion and ambulatory with scope to perform, support, and learn clinic-based activities. We seek an experienced colleague from ambulatory practice or hospital internship but are flexible for the right candidate; team integration and a confident, positive personality are prerequisites.
Experience in lameness diagnostics and treatment would be preferred but is not essential. We offer substantial support and encouragement for the right candidate.
We work a 40-hour, 4.5-day week with a fixed half day off in lieu of a weeknight on call, even during Equicall weeks. Typical hours are 9-5, with time allocated for admin, occasionally later in summer. One day of TOIL is given for weekend on-call duties.
An excellent package is available, including a laptop, mobile phone, and access to a pool vehicle for calls. A company vehicle can be provided if desired. Part-time or reduced hours will be considered for the right candidate.
Your colleagues:
You will have the support of colleagues with extensive referral practice experience. We pride ourselves on being forward-thinking and evidence-based; all vets are encouraged to engage in CPD and further learning. As part of IVC Evidensia, we have access to a wealth of skills and information to support your career. You can choose your area of interest, and we will support you.
Bi-monthly clinical meetings are held to share ideas and discuss cases. We actively work to reduce antibiotic and anthelmintic use with supportive strategies. We engage proactively with clients on routine health matters such as dentistry and worming through our popular Equine Health Plan.
On Call:
The on-call rota is a generous 1:8 supported by Equicall, with always available support. During the AI season, the rota reduces to 1:4 for inpatient cover, which is seldom required.
Equipment:
We have all the necessary equipment, including gastroscope/endoscope, in-house lab, diode laser, X-ray machine, ultrasound scanner with PACS, advanced dental equipment, weighbridge, shockwave, and individual SAA/Lactate machines for ambulatory vets. If you need additional equipment, just ask!
