Role Title: Technology Officers (Data Scientists/DevOps/Full Stack)
Role Nature: Volunteer
Location: Home-based
The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is an international volunteers-led think tank supporting and advocating the application of blockchain and other data technologies in the global fight against climate change.
OverviewThe Technology Officers support end-to-end projects by applying domain knowledge (e.g., finance, energy, forestry) to deliver data-driven insights. Roles include data science, data engineering, DevOps, and full stack development, with opportunities to specialize or rotate across areas to fit interests and career development. Projects may involve a range of data technologies beyond blockchain, including artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.
Responsibilities- Provide technical support for working groups in areas such as renewable energy, carbon trading, forest monitoring, natural resource management, blockchain technology, and artificial intelligence.
- Generate opportunities for strategic partnerships.
- Attend conferences and events to promote the BCI, communicate research findings via presentations, and engage with key stakeholders.
- Excellent oral communication and ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing demands under pressure.
- Strong technical skills (e.g., math and coding) and attention to detail.
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate ideas persuasively.
- Sense of mission and willingness to learn about technology and other relevant areas to deliver impactful climate actions.
- Aptitude in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish is desirable.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Java/C#, JavaScript, R, Scala, Go).
- Strong knowledge or interest in topics central to BCI such as climate change, climate finance, blockchain technology, and artificial intelligence.
- A relevant degree or training in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- Experience in software development or other technical aspects of data-driven systems.
- Proven ability in computing or math-related tasks in Agile technology projects.
- A portfolio of supported Open Source GitHub projects (desirable).
- Experience in building constructive relationships with stakeholders.
- Experience in working independently and with teams to drive forward projects using initiative.
- Experience in designing, planning, and facilitating independent research and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
Blockchain and other emerging technologies. Climate change and sustainability. These are key topics that have been gaining traction in research, pilots, and public discourse. BCI serves as an expert platform to help governments, inter-governmental and regional organizations, and relevant corporates navigate the complex landscape of emerging technologies for environmental good. We conduct research, identify opportunities, and analyze applications to support informed decision-making among stakeholders in the climate action network.

BCI welcomes candidates who may not have prior experience. To select the most suitable candidates, the following assessment process is used:
Section A: Verbal and Numerical Reasoning (20 multiple-choice questions)
Section B: Situation Judgment Test (20 multiple-choice questions)
Section C: In-Tray Exercise (open-ended assessment relevant to the role)
Candidates who pass all sections will be invited to a phone screening, first interview, and final interview online.
