Job Description
The University of Innsbruck invites applications for the position of a University Professor of Quantum Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. The vacant position is in accordance with 98 of the Austrian Universities' Act (Universitätsgesetz - UG) and will be based on a civil-law employment contract with the University on the basis of the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz). The contract is permanent, with full-time employment (100%). The Professorship of Quantum Computer Science is embedded in a unique interdisciplinary environment of experimental and theoretical physics, computer science and mathematics. Innsbruck is an internationally recognised leading hub in quantum computing. The close proximity to the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (IQOQI), to the national Cluster of Excellence Quantum Science Austria (quantA) and successful spin-offs such as Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT) and Parity Quantum Computing (ParityQC), offers outstanding opportunities. Tasks The mission of the professorship is to build a bridge between physics, computer science and mathematics. We are looking for a visionary personality with a forward-looking research agenda who will promote interdisciplinary collaboration and is willing to participate in the ongoing development in Innsbruck and help bring quantum computing to its full potential. The ideal candidate has achieved excellent research results in several of the following fields: Quantum algorithms Quantum complexity Quantum programming languages Quantum compilers, transpilers and runtime environments Quantum information theory and error correction Quantum learning Quantum security Applications for devices of the near future We expect close collaboration with the research groups at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. Partnerships should be formed and maintained with the university's key research areas (), industry and with local and international research institutions. In teaching, the professorship will contribute to the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Computer Science. In addition to a strong focus on quantum computing, the ideal candidate should also be able and willing to teach classical undergraduate computer science subjects. The supervision of Bachelor's, Master's and PhD theses is expected. This position also involves contributions to academic administration and self-governance of the Department and the Faculty. Employment requirements include a degree in higher education in Austria or the equivalent abroad, pertinent to the position; pertinent habilitation/venia docendi in Computer Science or equivalent qualification (e.g. Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor); excellent publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals and conferences; internationally recognised expertise in quantum computer science; demonstration of involvement in international research; relevant international experience; experience in the acquisition and administration of competitive third-party funds; strong didactic skills; management skills; ability to teach courses in English; willingness to teach courses in German within two years after the appointment.
