Job Description
University Professor (all genders) Specialist field of Integrated Photonics TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. At the Institute of Photonics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of "Integrated Photonics" with permanent (full-time) contractual employment is to be filled as of 1 October 2026. This is a professorship regulated by 98 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG). The position as professor for Integrated Photonics has been allocated in TU Wien's development plan to the following TU Wien Focal Areas of Research: Quantum Technologies, Materials and Matter The task of the professorship for Integrated Photonics will be to combine novel concepts with photonic technologies by striving to integrate all components (quantum emitters, waveguides, detectors) on a single chip. In particular, the combination of modern light sources (quantum heterostructure emitters, on-chip short-pulse lasers, frequency combs) with integrated waveguides will be researched. The prospective professor's research area should focus on as many of the following areas as possible: Basic research in (quantum) optoelectronics: novel semiconductor lasers, nanophotonic devices Integrated waveguides, couplers, switches, modulators. On-chip solutions, e.g., photon emitters in dielectric waveguides Novel quantum heterostructure detectors Development of novel integrated optical systems Investigation of quantum optical phenomena in integrated optical circuits Photonic computing, neural networks, all-optical data processing In addition to research, the responsibilities of a university professor at TU Wien also include teaching (in German and English) in bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs, as well as participation in the management of the institute and the faculty. These responsibilities include compulsory and elective courses from the entire field of photonics, particularly for the master's programs "Microelectronics and Photonics," "Telecommunications," and "Quantum Science and Technology." The Institute of Photonics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology focuses on the generation and application of predominantly coherent electromagnetic radiation in the visible and immediately adjacent spectral ranges. A key focus is the technical development of novel photonic sources and their applications. Research activities include new optical technologies as well as the development of modern integrated optical components and circuits, which form the basis for developments in communications engineering, environmental technology, sensor technology, and biomedicine. Classification in the pay grade A1 of the collective bargaining agreement for employees of universities and a full-time minimum salary of EUR 92,460.20 gross annual is provided for.
