This is a fixed-term, non-training post for 12 months, based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. You will work alongside training registrars with similar duties. This role offers valuable experience in diagnosing and managing patients with acute neurological conditions, including stroke.
Main duties of the jobYou will oversee the day-to-day care of inpatients under the supervision of consultants. Derriford operates an attending neurology system, with each consultant managing inpatients for one week at a time. There will also be opportunities for outpatient clinics.

LocationUHP, Plymouth
The neurology inpatient service is based on Merrivale ward, housing the acute stroke unit and serving as the home ward for neurology admissions. Patients are often first seen in the medical admissions unit (MAU) or the ambulatory admissions clinic.
Post DutiesYou will be responsible for the daily care of inpatients under consultant supervision. Derriford's attending neurology system involves weekly inpatient management by each consultant, with outpatient clinics available.
Person Specification Qualifications- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCP(UK) Part 1 or equivalent at application
- MRCP(UK) full diploma or equivalent by appointment (full exam must be obtained by the offer date for subsequent rounds)
- Experience managing patients in acute medical specialties during core training or equivalent
- Experience at ST1 or 2 level managing neurological patients and emergencies
- Understanding of research ethics, audit, clinical risk, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement
- Teaching experience or training
- Research methodology knowledge, academic achievements, publications, involvement in audits or research projects, and commitment to patient safety and clinical improvement
- Full GMC registration and a current license to practice
- Foundation competencies from UKFPO or equivalent by appointment
- CT/ST1 and ST2 competencies in medicine supported by assessments and feedback
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Not previously released from a training program in this specialty unless under exceptional circumstances
This post requires a DBS check due to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975.
Salary£61,825 to £70,425 per year, depending on experience.
