An exciting opportunity exists to appoint a Foundation Year 1 post to the General Surgery/Urology department at our hospital. The successful candidate will rotate among the surgical specialties, based on the candidates' satisfactory performance and training needs.

Main duties of the job

The post will be fully integrated into the elective and emergency workload of the Urology department. The successful candidates will be part of a 1:11 rota, covering emergencies in General Surgery and Urology. On calls are supported by two F1's during the day and one F1 at night; and one resident registrar on call on the site at all times.

The emergency take is supported by three consultants. One from the Emergency Surgical Assessment Unit, one Emergency theatre surgeon and one on-call consultant. The post involves working across three sites at Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead General Hospital and St Albans City Hospital.

Job responsibilities

The post is suitable for doctors aiming to apply for FY1 applicants. Successful candidate will have full support by their teams and supervisors, so they can gain the appropriate experience and knowledge, in elective and emergency surgery, and progress into the next step of their careers. It provides a great opportunity for hands on operative experience working with highly experienced consultants.

Watford General Hospital is a busy district general hospital, with Greater London, with a significant number of emergency and elective cases. There will be exposure to major vascular, colo-rectal and upper GI cases as well as major breast cancer surgery.

The team structures are firm-based which benefits continuity of care, and provides an excellent training environment. The successful candidate is expected to perform audits and help with undergoing research within the department.

This will help them to improve their CV by participating in national and international conferences and by publishing in peer review journals. The full educational program will be discussed and adjusted at the beginning of the placement to meet the post takers training needs. Study leave can also be provided to facilitate this.

Person Specification Education and qualifications:
  • M.B.B.S or Equivalent
  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes
  • MRCS Part 1 and/or 2 Other degrees e.g. BSc. Masters, PhD (or equivalent)
Knowledge:
  • Basic Urological procedures
Experience:
  • Experience in UK Hospital
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Understands current clinical issues in specialty
  • Able to consult senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
  • Understands the confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance

Salary: £34,115 to £37,972 a year, including £149 HCA per annum
