This post is suitable for a trainee with knowledge and experience of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology care as well as a solid grounding in Acute Paediatric Medicine. A comprehensive training programme is available within this post, equivalent to the training delivered through the UK National Grid training programme to achieve Specialty Certification. It would also be suitable for an experienced Paediatric Oncology trainee wishing to make their training comprehensive.

This post will last 12 months with the expectation of extension. It will provide training in the clinical aspects of Paediatric Oncology and will be based in the Department of Paediatric Oncology (Royal Victoria Infirmary) within the Children's Directorate of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

The post will include the responsibility and supervision of children (both in patient, day case and out patient) with leukaemia, solid tumours and adolescents with malignancies. The holder will rotate through three month blocks as appropriate, with special responsibility for patients divided into the following groups. Rotations may be customised to meet specific training needs.

• Children, teenagers and adolescents with extracranial solid tumours.
• Young people with brain tumours.
• Young people leading up to and following allogeneic stem cell transplantation and chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy.
• Care of children receiving conditioning and delivery of stem cell transplantation.
• Clinical management of young people with a comprehensive range of malignancies and haematological disorders.

Administrative:

• Involved in the administration of the Paediatric Oncology Unit: ensuring documentation of all patients on the Unit and discharge summaries are kept up to date, supervising junior staff.
• Responsible, with other junior colleagues, for the administration of out of hours cover for the paediatric oncology unit.

Research:

• Encouraged to undertake a clinical research project, potentially interacting with the department's major research team: Leukaemic Stem Cell therapeutic targeting, Chromosomal abnormalities within ALL, Molecular pathology of neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma, Clinical and molecular pharmacology of anti cancer agents, Epidemiology of childhood malignancies, Long term follow up and survivorship, Development and delivery of early phase trial therapy, Investigation and development of new healthcare technologies.

Teaching:

• Expected to participate in the teaching programme and teach bedside undergraduate and medical students.
• The trust has a dedicated Training and Medical Education department offering face to face and online training. Within the Paediatric Directorate there are daily morning teaching sessions and a weekly grand round.
• In paediatric oncology there is a weekly junior medical staff-driven teaching and journal club session and weekly targeted training sessions by the Consultant of the week.
• The preclinical research unit provides a curriculum of weekly oncology research presentations including local, national and international speakers.

Flexibility:

In line with the Trust's core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. Some staff groups will be asked to work a more flexible pattern to offer services in the evening or weekend. Any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications

• Primary Medical Qualification
• At least 12 months UK based Paediatric Middle Grade (ST3+)
• Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months
• Prior Paediatric Oncology experience

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

• Good history & examination skills
• Able to formulate a working diagnosis
• Able to order appropriate investigations
• Image interpretation relevant to practice
• Able to institute complex management plans
• Advanced level of skills and knowledge in paediatric oncology /haematology
• Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague

Maintaining Clinical Competence

• Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments

Teaching

• Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

• Experience of audit projects

Communication, Relationships and Working with Colleagues

• Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
