Applications are invited for the post of Trust Doctor (eqv to ST4+) in Emergency Medicine based at Newham University Hospital.
Applicants should have 4 or more years' Emergency Medicine or acute care experience and MRCEM (or equivalent), and be capable of working at ST4+ level which includes being in charge as a senior decision maker overnight (with consultant support off-site).
Initial 6-month fixed-term contract, up to 48 hours per week, working a mixture of day, late and night shifts on a 1:3 rota. We fully support requests for flexible and less than full time working. There is also the possibility of extension after August subject to funding. Due to the short-term nature of the post and the requirement for a prompt start, this appointment is intended for applicants who are currently UK-based.

Main duties of the jobNewham Hospital Emergency Department is seeking to appoint two Trust Grade Registrars (ST4 equivalent or above) to join a busy, high-acuity inner-city ED serving one of the most diverse and socio-economically deprived populations in the UK.
Newham Emergency Department manages a high volume of undifferentiated, high-risk and complex acute presentations, spanning major trauma, medical and surgical emergencies, infectious diseases, mental health crises, and social vulnerability. This role offers outstanding exposure to senior clinical decision-making, leadership, and operational management, with Registrars frequently leading the department overnight in a consultant-supported model. The post also provides experience across a wide range of Emergency Medicine services, including Same
Day Emergency Care, the Clinical Decision Unit, Injuries, and Paediatric Emergency Medicine, reflecting the breadth of modern emergency care delivery.
You will join a supportive, well-established team of Higher Specialty Trainees and CESR Registrars, in a department that is known for being very welcoming with a strong culture of education, governance and service development. The post includes opportunities for leadership, teaching, audit, quality improvement, and research in a department committed to tackling health inequalities and improving outcomes for underserved communities.

Person Specification Qualifications / Training- Primary medical qualification accepted by GMC (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise at time of application (or confirmed eligibility before start date)
- Completion of FY2 or equivalent by post start date
- ALS provider status in date or confirmed ability to obtain before start date
- MRCEM primary (or equivalent) achieved
- Additional acute care qualifications (e.g. ATLS, APLS, BASIC)
- Ultrasound Level 1 qualification
- Additional relevant degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate)
- MRCEM intermediate (or significant CESR-aligned portfolio) achieved
- Full FRCEM achieved
- Minimum 24 months FTE experience in Emergency Medicine at ST1-3 level or equivalent
- Independent in adults only
- Independent across adults and paediatrics
- Independent across all ED areas e.g. adults paediatrics, resus, UTC/minors, RAT
- Experience in high-volume or urban ED
- Has independently clerked and managed undifferentiated adult ED patients without the need for direct supervision
- Has assessed paediatric emergency patients in an ED or paediatric acute care setting without the need for direct supervision
- Completion of EM-relevant courses aligned to RCEM curriculum
- Evidence of portfolio development aligned to EM training
- Has independently managed acutely unwell patients (e.g. sepsis, asthma, trauma) during supervised ED or acute care shifts
- Has provided senior reviews for resident doctors and for critically unwell or high risk patients
- Has demonstrated safe clinical decision making with appropriate senior escalation in complex cases
- Competent in the following advanced ED procedures: Advanced airway management, POCUS, NIV initiation , Chest drains -Procedural sedation -Closed fracture reduction
- Adhoc delivery of teaching for undergraduate or resident doctors
- Regular structured teaching or formal teaching role
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
