Job Description

The Transport Manager is required to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of our home delivery network across the North of England. The role will be responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe and cost-effective management of transport activities, maintaining high service quality, and driving continuous improvements across the network. This is a key leadership role requiring strong operational expertise, people management skills, and a good understanding of home delivery logistics.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operational Management
    • Lead and manage daily transport operations for the North of England and Scotland.
    • Oversee scheduling, route planning, fleet utilisation, and subcontractor performance.
    • Ensure on-time delivery, service quality, and compliance with KPIs and SLAs.
  • People & Performance Leadership
    • Manage, coach, and develop transport team members and regional transport leads.
    • Ensure all drivers, subcontractors, and logistics partners operate to the highest standards.
    • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Ensure full compliance with UK and EU road transport legislation, including driver hours, vehicle safety, and environmental standards.
    • Maintain and enforce health & safety policies, ensuring risk assessments and incident investigations are completed.
    • CPC responsibility to ensure full compliance in line with statutory requirement.
    • Defect management of vehicles and fleet in general ensuring defects are closed and standard processes are in place across all sites.
  • Cost & Efficiency Management
    • Accountability forachieving transport budgets, optimising costs, and delivering productivity improvements.
    • Identify and implement efficiency gains in fleet management, routing, and subcontractor partnerships.
    • Support sustainability goals, including CO reduction initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Act as the key point of contact for internal stakeholders (customer service, planning, warehouse, senior management).
    • Manage relationships with third-party carriers and delivery partners.
    • Analyse transport performance and deliver data-driven improvements.
    • Lead or support transport-related projects, such as new technology implementation, route optimisation tools, and process automation.
    • Drive best practice sharing across the network.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Proven experience in transport / logistics management, ideally within home delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of UK road transport regulations, compliance, and health & safety standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage transport budgets and deliver cost savings.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with experience managing both direct teams and third-party providers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in transport planning systems (e.g., TMS, route optimisation tools).
