Job Description
Training Centre Instructor (Firefighter Safety) - West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service

Are you passionate about developing others, shaping operational excellence, and delivering high quality training that keeps our firefighters safe? West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service is offering an exciting 12 month fixed term opportunity, with the possibility of extension depending on organisational need. This role sits at the heart of our commitment to firefighter safety and professionalism.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals with practical training and exercising experience who can help design, develop and deliver a wide range of training packages that directly influence operational performance across the service. Whether you are looking for a full time position or exploring job share opportunities, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

As a Training Instructor within the Firefighter Safety Department, you will play a key part in the development and delivery of firefighter safety training across the organisation. Your work will help ensure our crews and trainees have the skills, confidence and competence needed to respond effectively and safely to operational incidents.

You will:

  • Lead and support crews and trainees as they develop operational skills.
  • Coordinate and deliver a range of engaging training activities and exercise events.
  • Plan and deliver scenario-based exercises both within WYFRS and at regional training venues.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of working practices, equipment, and performance.
  • Support development of learning materials that enhance firefighter safety and incorporate findings from real-world incidents.
  • You will be required to wear Breathing Apparatus in a live fire and smoke environment.

This position will involve occasional evening and weekend work and attendance at external courses where required.

What We are Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals with a strong commitment to professional development and a passion for enhancing firefighter safety. You should bring:

  • Practical experience of emergency operations and confidence instructing within operational or emergency environments.
  • Experience organising and delivering training and exercise events.
  • Strong communication, planning, organisational and problem solving skills.
  • The ability to work effectively with teams, influence others and maintain confidentiality.
  • A proactive, resilient approach and commitment to WYFRS values and the NFCC Core Code of Ethics.
