Job Description

Role: Trainee Health Screener

Location: Basingstoke & Andover - the role will cover screening locations in Basingstoke & Andover. Travel to our programme office in Hampshire may be required. Salary: £24,852.66 rising upon completion of your Diploma.

Diabetic Eye Screening involves checking for eye problems caused by diabetes. The eye screening test can detect issues before sight is affected. Pictures are taken of the back of the eyes to check for changes.

Main duties
  • Ensure that patients are made to feel welcome and comfortable throughout the screening process
  • Undertake the screening Checklist to ensure the screening environment is safe (for yourself and your patients)
  • Basic maintenance of the camera and equipment to enable the best possible images
  • Safely administer the eye drops (to enlarge pupils), and undertake photographs ensuring correct field of view
  • Identify any patients requiring urgent onward referral at the time of their screening appointment
  • Maintaining a sufficient stock of consumables to run your clinic

Role progression

Starting as a Screener you will be trained on the job and will be given all the skills and knowledge to complete your Health Screener Diploma. Once trained there are opportunities to progress in Diabetic Eye Screening to roles such as Screener/Grader, Arbitration Grader, Referral Outcome Grader, OCT Examiner, OCT Grader, Slit Lamp Examiner, or Team Leader/Management.

  • Compassionate individuals who are empathetic towards the needs of each patient
  • Willing to travel to screening services in the Basingstoke & Andover area
  • Ability to take detailed/up-close pictures of the eye and remain composed
  • Adaptable and able to think quickly to resolve problems
  • Flexible in working hours; occasional evening and weekend work may be required; commitment to completing the Health Screener Diploma in the required timescale
  • Interested in a career in care
  • Enjoy working with the public, are caring and have an intrinsic need to help others
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Full driving licence and access to a car for travel to clinics
