The Havens are London's Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) based in Camberwell, Paddington / Ladbroke Grove and Whitechapel. They are jointly commissioned by the London Mayor's Office for Policing & Crime (MOPAC London) and the National Health Service England (NHS England)

This is a unique opportunity to join a dedicated, multi-professional team as a Trainee Forensic Nurse Examiner.

As a FNE you will:
  • be a RN1: Adult nurse, level 1
  • ideally have a non-medical prescribing qualification and physical assessment skills with considerable experience in sexual or women's health.
  • work independently and autonomously conducting forensic medical examinations on clients' post-sexual assault.
  • be instrumental in the development and monitoring of clinical practice, protocols and care pathways within the service.
  • understand that your role will include the provision of statements and giving evidence of fact as a professional witness within a court of law.
  • have enhanced communication and presentation skills, a flexible approach and detailed knowledge of the impact of sexual assault are also required.
  • be joining a service that promotes and supports personal and professional development. Training and competency assessment of forensic work will be provided.
A genuine commitment to working with our client group is critical. Previous experience within a SARC is desirable

Main duties of the job As a registered nurse with considerable experience in sexual or women health, you will be supported with forensic work training and competency assessment.

You will lead on the management of individual episodes of client care for clients 13 years of age and above - independently and autonomously carrying out forensic medical examinations and collection of evidence post sexual assault. This will include assessment and management of other acute needs such as review of physical injury, prevention of pregnancy, prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV, including direct referral to other clinical services or agencies as required, including managing client risk and safeguarding.

Using your enhanced communication skills you will have a flexible approach and detailed knowledge of the impact of sexual assault.

You will utilise your safeguarding expertise to explore and assess a client's safety and safeguarding needs, including client's capacity and mental health.

As a senior nurse you will be an approachable professional role model for junior nursing staff and the wider multi professional team, providing clinical support and guidance as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Trust and medico-legal requirements.
Professional/Clinical
  • To be accountable for own practice and utilise available opportunities to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence
  • To obtain a detailed and comprehensive patient history and undertake relevant assessment and documentation of injuries and where appropriate complete a forensic examination in line with current guidance
  • Ensures that any forensic evidence collected for police and self-referral clients is taken and stored as appropriate to ensure integrity and the chain of evidence
  • To provide advanced level, autonomous nursing care to clients following sexual assault and undertake procedures and practices such as speculum examination, bimanual examination, proctoscopy and use of the colposcope as required
  • To develop and implement a management plan for each client referring as necessary internally and externally to the department as required
  • Ensures that appropriate mental health risk and capacity assessments are completed and safeguarding issues highlighted and addressed as per local policy
  • To ensure that the client's privacy and dignity is maintained with consideration to the cultural, religious or social beliefs of each individual
  • Provides advice and care regarding prevention of pregnancy and prophylaxis of Sexually Transmitted Infections including HIV.
  • To prescribe, supply and administer medicines in accordance with Trust policy and procedures as a non-medical prescriber.
  • To monitor the effectiveness of care and treatment through follow up as required (including partner notification) according to departmental guidelines
  • To maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with NMC, Trust and medico-legal requirements.
  • To provide written statements as requested by the Metropolitan Police Service
  • To attend court and provide evidence of fact as requested by the Crown Prosecution Service
Quality
  • To attend and participate in professional meetings within the Havens, Division or Trust as required
  • To attend SOE peer review and educational update meetings
  • To engage in local and national forums to develop practice and raise the profile of the service and Trust
  • To be fully aware of the National Initiatives and Policy documents relating to Sexual Assault and Violence
  • To identify and monitor any risk to patient or staff safety taking appropriate action as required.
  • To support the risk management process through the Datix system
  • To participate in nursing clinical audit and research to support, maintain and develop expected standards of care
  • To meet regularly with line manager and clinical supervisor to review clinical audit and practice
  • To arrange and attend clinical supervision
  • To utilise and disseminate research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care
Education
  • To contribute to an assessment of own educational needs, developing and agreeing a professional development plan with the line manager and clinical supervisor
  • To keep up to date with clinical and nursing developments as required to meet the revalidation standards of the NMC
  • To support the training and mentorship of staff, students and trainees within the department
  • To teach on relevant courses in affiliated university nursing departments and external courses as required
Leadership/Management
  • To be a credible and approachable professional role model for junior nursing staff and the wider multi professional team - providing clinical support and guidance as required
  • In conjunction with the Matron and nursing team to support and participate in the development of nursing within the Haven service
  • To support and participate recruitment and induction activities across the nursing and MDT team
Person specification Education and Qualifications
  • Current NMC Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Non-medical prescribing course or experience in supply of medication via PGD
  • Teaching or mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Evidence of a master's degree in healthcare or willingness to work towards
  • Evidence of current continuing professional development.
  • Recognised qualification / training or relevant experience in contraception and sexual health and evidence of associated competencies
