As a MotorThermal designEngineer at ZeroAvia,you'llplay a crucial role in designing, developing andoptimizingthermalaspects ofhydrogen-electric powertrains.You'llcollaborate with amultidisciplinary teamof thermal, aerodynamics and turbomachinery engineersto create efficient, reliable, and high-performance thermal solutions for aviation applications.
Reportingto the Head of Aerothermal designyou willcontribute,withinan integrated project team,onall aspects of our electric motor thermal design. This includes;1D and 3D analyses of the rotor,stator and housing thermal performance,definition of thermal interfaces,selectionand development of thermal system components such as pumps,filtersand sensors.In collaborationwith our System Test Team define,executeandanalysedata fromthermal testsat sub-componentand full assembly level.Leverage test data tovalidatemodels and incorporate learnings intoworking with our Systems Engineering team to define,validateand verify equipment requirements relevant to thermal aspects of the design.

KeyResponsibilities- All aspects of electric motor thermal designincludinganalysis,testand verification
- Collaborate with mechanical, electromagnetics and systems engineering teams to develop innovative thermal managementconcepts and designs
- Develop thermal and fluids models for electric motor thermal management and lubrication including;
- Hand calculations pertinent tothermofluidsdesign
- 1D thermal/fluid network analyses
- Define strategies for experimental validation ofthermalanalysesat sub-componentand full assembly level
- Liaise closely with internal stakeholders to define,validateand demonstrate compliance to equipment,powertrainand certification requirements
- Prepare technical reportsin support of requirements validation and demonstration ofcompliance
- Specification and delivery of relevant equipment such as pumps, filters,sensorsand fluid conveyance
- Contribute to the development of ZeroAvia modelling methodologies, bestpracticesand design standards
- Bachelor's Degree inAerospaceor MechanicalEngineering
- Minimum 5 years industry experience as a Thermal Engineeror similar
- Knowledgeofkeyprinciples of electric motor design such aselectromagnetics,rotor dynamics, motorarchitecturesand manufacturing methods
- Provenapplicationthermal analysis methods with specific application to electric motor design
- Experience in Matlab,Simulink&Simscape
- Experience with motor designsoftwares(e.g.MotorCAD)
- CFD experience including conjugate heattransfer(preferentially usingStarCCM+)
- CFD experience including moving reference frame(MRF) modelling (prefentiallyusingStarCCM+)
- Experiencewithexperimentalmethods &equipment relevant tomotorthermalcharacterisation
- Demonstrable experience ofdesign to requirements, preferentially within an aerospace context
- Competency in the use of CAD and PLM software (preferentially Siemens NX andTeamCenter)
- Awareness of high voltage systems, powerelectronicsand Hydrogen fuel cells a plus
- Hazardous Area Voltage (HAV) trained
- Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as good written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent level of spoken and written English (additionallanguages a plus).
- Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of an integrated project team
- Able to travel internationally on occasion
- This role is primarily office/lab- based with occasional movement around test facilities.
- Must be able to work at a desk and move between office environments.
