INTRODUCTIONOne of the most celebrated broadcast ensembles in the world, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra has been inspiring audiences for over 100 years. Founded in 1922, the orchestra has shaped the Greater Manchester region into a cultural destination and a hub for world class talent in orchestral music.
In partnership with BBC Music, the Philharmonic regularly records live concerts and premieres new works. The ensemble's broadcasts reach millions of listeners via radio, television and BBC Sounds.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLEKEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- To sit as Sub Principal No.3 Cello and step up to Principal No.2 Cello as required.
- To demonstrate excellent orchestral and solo playing ability, maintaining the highest musical standards.
- To support and develop positive working relationships with conductors, freelancers and all members of the orchestra.
- To play a key role in the life of the BBC Philharmonic, being a passionate team player committed to maintaining and enhancing the orchestra's reputation.
KEY CRITERIA
- Outstanding professional orchestral and solo playing abilities.
- Knowledge, passion and appreciation for the range of repertoire performed by the BBC Philharmonic.
- Ability to lead, motivate and work collaboratively, providing artistic direction and inspiring colleagues.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to working as part of a diverse team.
Auditions will be held at the BBC Philharmonic studio at MediaCityUK on 10, 11 and 12 December 2025.
First Round
All applicants must submit an audio visual file of:
- The opening 15 bars of the slow movement of Brahms' Symphony No. 2.
- Bars 104 to 112 inclusive of James MacMillan's "The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie".
The panel will judge accuracy of playing rather than recording quality.
Second Round
Successful first round candidates will be invited to an unscreened audition in the studio at MediaCityUK.
Candidates will be asked to play:
- Elgar - "In the South".
- One excerpt from lists A, B and C.
- William Tell - the opening cello solo and the solo passages of Brahms Third Piano Concerto.
- A short piece of prepared sight reading.
Solo pieces for the day include: an exposition of either Haydn C major or D major concerto (1st movement) and an exposition of a romantic concerto of the candidate's choosing.
