Staff Nurse (Band 5) - Olayan Day Care

We are looking for a full time Band 5 Nurse to work for a 12 month secondment within the Olayan Day Care unit which incorporates both solid and haematology tumours. The role requires a proactive and motivated practitioner with the ability to work within a busy unit caring for patients undergoing a variety of SACT and supportive treatments.

Main duties of the job- Plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, in conjunction with the shift co ordinator.
- Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with guidance from the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co ordinator:
- Complete a first level assessment of the patient's needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients with cancer and their families, and develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure the needs of the patient and family are met.
- Assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment and home care.
- Be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress and adopt a problem solving approach to minimise potentially adverse reactions.
- Involved in the direct delivery of skilled specialised nursing care with supervision until competent (e.g. wound dressings, removal of drains, insertion of urinary catheters).
- Registration
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Qualification in oncology or speciality
- Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
- Recognised teaching qualification
- Experience in intravenous drug administration
- Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills.
- Experience in chemotherapy administration
- Experience in clinical management
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members.
- Strong teamwork skills.
- Self motivation and ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise.
- Commitment to customer care initiatives.
- Understanding of quality issues.
- Understanding of the NHS Plan.
- Computer literacy (e.g. Microsoft Word and Outlook).
- Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills.
- Effective negotiating and influencing skills.
