Specialist Doctor in General Medicine - Outlier Team/Virtual Ward

This is a new team created to promote early discharge to virtual wards and alternative healthcare pathways. The post holder will manage medical patients on surgical wards and oversee the virtual ward team. The role requires advocacy and innovation for early discharge and may include a focus on holistic/lifestyle medicine and social prescribing to support patient self management post discharge.

While the majority of the role will be ward-based, opportunities for specialty work will be available for those interested. The position is part of the middle grade rota and includes out of hours work.

Main duties

• Maintain the highest clinical standards in general medical patient care.
• Prepare and manage medical patients placed on surgical wards.
• Monitor and advise patients on the virtual ward.
• Focus on early discharge to the virtual ward/Acute Care at Home and other programmes.
• Innovate alternative support methods to enable early and safe discharge from medical wards.
• Teach and train junior staff and medical students where applicable.
• Ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
• Participate in departmental and Trust clinical governance, audit and related matters.
• Attend meetings as appropriate.

Qualifications

• Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice.

Experience

• Experience teaching medical students, postgraduates and MDT members.
• Experience in clinical audit and clinical governance, with an understanding of their impact on quality of care.
• Experience working within the UK NHS.
