Applications are invited for Specialty Doctor to support our Medical Division in Older Adults. This post is available with immediate effect for a period of 12 months and will specifically support our inpatient wards and Frail Elderly Assessment Unit (FEAU).

The Trust is a University Teaching Hospital with its own Medical School and has a newly built Academic Complex. You must have experience in General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine; be comfortable in the initial assessment and on going treatment of acutely ill, adult medical patients with a wide variety of pathology. You will work under consultant supervision and within a dedicated team at all times. As a University hospital and a major tertiary centre, we offer a large variety of sub specialty services providing an excellent learning environment. There will be requirement to work weekends and bank holidays on a rotational basis. While these posts do not have educational approval, they provide excellent experience and access to the same educational resources as our Trust approved training posts and many previous post holders have gone on to accept GP or Specialist Registrar posts.

In order to be considered applicants must have FULL GMC Registration, Basic Life Support and have previous experience of working in the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The post holder:

• To assess, treat and discharge patients within Elderly Care.
• To promote good communication to patients, carers and staff, often communicating sensitive information with empathy in relation to patient conditions.
• To ensure effective communication is maintained and enhanced with primary care and acute sector colleagues.
• To participate in monitoring clinical standards, patient pathways and protocols, particularly to ensure the fundamental and essential aspects of patient care is maintained.
• To work within own realm of competence at all times and taking opportunities to update skills, knowledge and professional development.
• To make referrals to specialists as and when required and within the UHNM protocols.
• To assist in managing clinical risk by identifying and implementing action plans in accordance with UHNM protocols.

About us

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. Job responsibilities

The Trust has two sites - Royal Stoke and County Hospital, with services for older adults provided on both sites. Royal Stoke site has four acute wards and an FEAU (Frail Elderly Assessment Unit) together with two step down wards. County Site has one elderly care ward with plans to open a step down ward. The Department has 8 substantive consultants at Royal Stoke and 1 substantive consultant at County and you will join a team of 3 other specialty doctors and 10 Trust Grade doctors, in addition to trainee doctors. The post holder may be required to rotate to County Hospital.

The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing clinical care to older patients and will work with consultants, specialist registrars, Trust grades, foundation doctors, GP trainees and advanced nurse practitioners. The post holder will work on FEAU and elderly care wards, as well as providing a liaison service to other wards/departments and undertaking outpatient clinics. There will be a requirement to take part in weekend on calls 1:6 weekends between 0900hrs-1700hrs, including bank holidays.

University Hospital of North Staffordshire is the teaching Hospital for Keele University Medical School and the post holder will gain experience in teaching undergraduate medical school students as part of their job plan. The Department has a strong emphasis on teaching and training and professional development and has weekly departmental educational meetings, audits, mortality meetings and also Hospital Grand rounds.

Person Specification Qualifications

• Full GMC Registration
• Basic Medical Qualifications
• MRCP part 1/ 2
• Advanced Life Support
• Diploma in Elderly Care

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

• Minimum 3 years of experience in Elderly Care and or related specialties.
• Experience in subspecialties - orthogeriatric, palliative care, dementia and frailty.
• Audits/Research
• Organisational ability.
• Good communication skills with colleagues, patients and relatives.
• Willingness to participate in multi disciplinary team work.
• Participate in postgraduate education and audit.
• Interest in / ability to develop one in more areas of special clinical interest.
• An understanding of current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
• Personal Professional Indemnity Insurance.
