We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team to support us with our treatment and education services in Dental Sedation. We offer excellent clinical facilities in our dedicated Sedation Department, which consists of sedation surgeries, a recovery area and pre-assessment rooms. All surgeries have the facility to undertake intravenous and inhalational sedation. The post is available from 14 January 2022 and is a permanent position.
You will be an experienced Dental Surgeon with enthusiasm to communicate your knowledge and experience to students and patients. You will have been fully registered with the GDC for at least three years and have experience of intravenous and inhalational conscious sedation. You will be offered a structured induction and support with the opportunity for further educational development. You will assume responsibility for the planning, co-ordination and delivery of specific components of service and teaching in partnership with clinical and academic colleagues.
Main duties of the jobThe primary aim of the 0.8 WTE Specialty Doctor post is to provide a clinical sedation service (intravenous and inhalational) and comprehensive dental treatment for patients in the Sedation Department, under the direction of the consultant lead. The post-holder will also contribute to the organisation and delivery of sedation teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The nature of the post requires that candidates should have substantial experience in conscious sedation, as defined and practiced according to UK guidelines on dental sedation. Possession of a postgraduate qualification in dental sedation or a commitment to undertake this qualification within the first 18 months of appointment is essential.

Job responsibilitiesClinical:
Provide a clinical service in sedation (intravenous & inhalational) and operative dental treatment (restorative and surgical) for adult and paediatric dental patients.
Provide assessment and treatment planning for new sedation referrals.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills- BDS or equivalent
- Fully registered with the General Dental Council for at least three years
- MFDS or equivalent
- Postgraduate qualification in Dental Sedation or a commitment to undertake the qualification within 18 months of commencing the post
- Leadership and training experience
- Certificate in teaching or medical education
- At least three years post BDS qualification experience in clinical dentistry
- Substantial clinical experience in intravenous and inhalational sedation for dentistry
- Completed a Foundation Training programme and at least one year in a recognised NHS post as DCT or above
- Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues
- Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities
- Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to personal development
- Experience of supervising or training clinical dental trainees, students or DCPs
- Experience in sedation teaching and training
- An understanding of Clinical Governance
- Understanding of UK guidelines on the practice of dental sedation
- Successful completion of audit projects that have led to change
