Specialty Doctor

St Johns Hospice provides care to patients and their families from both NWL and NCL ICBs.

We currently have an opportunity for a Specialty resident doctor wanting to develop knowledge and skills in caring for patients requiring specialist palliative care. In addition to the 17 bedded inpatient unit, we also have a Community Specialist Palliative Care Team, a Hospice at Home Team, a Wellbeing Centre and a Lymphoedema Service. Working across all departments, we also have our social work and bereavement team and our hospice therapies team. In addition we provide a number of complementary therapies which are available for both the patient and those important to them.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide day to day medical management for patients in the Inpatient Unit, including admissions, ward rounds, clinical meetings and MDT collaboration.
  • Ensure high quality, contemporaneous clinical documentation using SystmOne.
  • Assess and manage the palliative needs of patients and support the emotional and psychological needs of their families and carers.
  • Complete medical examiner referrals, coroner referrals and MCCDs.
  • Support Wellbeing Centre, outpatient and community patients as required.
  • Provide cross cover for colleagues during leave.
  • Liaise effectively with Primary and Secondary Care teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Contribute to the training and supervision of junior doctors, medical students and other learners.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, research and quality improvement.
  • Maintain CPD and meet GMC revalidation requirements.
Person Specification Experience
  • Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years experience post full GMC registration
  • Broad medical experience, including some exposure to specialist palliative care
  • Strong interest in developing skills in Palliative Medicine
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, families and colleagues
  • Skilled multidisciplinary team working
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload effectively
  • Experience of clinical audit with evidence of impact
  • Awareness of own limitations and willingness to seek support
