Restorative Dentistry is seeking two fixed term part time (2PA) Specialty Dentist to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual(s) with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.

The post holders will be expected to show drive and initiative towards patient care putting the patient first. They should have significant experience in the provision of mandibular advancement devices for the management of obstructive sleep apnoea. They will be based within the Restorative dental services, and will work as part of the dental sleep service team. They will: run a weekly telephone clinic on site for new patients referred from the Medical Sleep Service for mandibular advancement devices; provide treatment for this interesting patient group and they may also be involved in the supervision of DCTs and clinical nurse specialists. There is a drive to work towards more use of digital technology and the post holder would be expected to be involved in development of this service, as well as closer working with the Medical Sleep Service.

• Be dentally qualified
• Have experience in providing mandibular advancement sleep devices
• Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post
• Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities

Job responsibilities

Job Plan

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 2 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out at both Guys and St Thomas sites. This is an outline programme and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your Clinical Lead within 3 months of your start date.

This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends. The job plan will be negotiated between the clinician and the clinical director at least annually. The initial job plan for this post is planned to be:

• Direct Clinical Care Activities
  • Clinical duties will relate to the management of patients referred from the Medical sleep service for the provision of mandibular advancement devices.
• Other Programmed Activities
  • These will be relating to improving the service provided within the scope of the areas where direct clinical care is focused

Person Specification Audit Management & IT

• Effective Participation in clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills required.
• Knowledge and understanding of the NHS policies and procedures.
• Experience in undertaking virtual clinics using software such as Attend Anywhere/ Microsoft Teams.

Research. Teaching skill & experience

• Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
• Apply evidence based practice to clinical care
• Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
• Publications in refereed Journals
• Research relevant to dentistry and OSA, or a willingness to be involved in setting up research projects.
• Formal teaching qualification
• Communication; Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
• Accountability; Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
• Interpersonal Skills; Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co operatively with others.
• Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope with setbacks or pressure.

• Staff Management; Experience of performance management, developing and motivating staff.
• Finance; Knowledge of finance and budgets.

Professional Qualifications

• Eligible for full UK GDC registration and a Licence to Practice

Clinical Experience

• Management of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea with mandibular advancement devices (MADs)

Clinical Skills

• Able to assess suitability of patients for MADs and able to identify unsuitable patients.
• Understanding of the risks associated with MADs and able to communicate these clearly to patients.
• Able to take accurate records required for the construction of MADs.
• Able to fit MADs.
• Experience in use of intra oral scanners to take digital impressions and protrusive records.
• Experience working in MDT
