Speciality Doctor in Older Peoples Care Unit

The trust is seeking a Full time (10PA) Speciality Doctor to work within the Older Peoples Care Unit at Hazelwood House. Nottinghamshire Healthcare is a major provider of specialist mental health services for older people in Nottingham City and the wider county. The service caters to the needs of all people suffering from dementia, regardless of age, and those aged over 65 years presenting with severe and enduring mental health illnesses such as depression.

The Trust has 90 assessment and treatment beds: 38 at Highbury hospital (20 organic and 18 functional beds), 35 at Blossomwood Mental health unit (15 organic and 20 functional beds) and 10 on Dove ward.

Main duties of the job

This 10 PA post is based in City and South County (Broxtowe) IHTT. The doctor will provide clinical and medical leadership to the MDT and lead the assessment and treatment of patients in the IHTT catchment area under the supervision of Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Katie Ward. The doctor will manage a range of mental health problems including behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, late onset psychosis and personality disorders in a community setting. He or she will assess patients in crisis situations and under the Mental Health Act, chair weekly MDTs, formulate management plans and work closely with community psychiatric nurses, pharmacy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy colleagues.

Job responsibilities

Provision of comprehensive old age psychiatry service and diagnosis and treatment of patients within the sector; medical/psychiatric assessments to inform care planning and risk assessment; liaison with other services (Primary Care, Social Services, RRLP, IHTT, DOS and Domiciliary & Voluntary sectors) to facilitate patient care.

  • Provide medical leadership for the multi disciplinary team in City and Broxtowe IHTTs
  • Complete administrative tasks related to clinical responsibilities
  • Maintain a revalidation portfolio and participate in annual appraisal
  • Undertake a job plan review with the Clinical Directors annually
  • Maintain professional registration with the GMC and approval as a Section 12(2) approved doctor
  • Comply with Trusts agreed policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with legislation affecting the care of older people with mental illness
Person Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
  • Three years' experience in Psychiatry
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • In good standing with the GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice
Transport
  • Holds a valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of proposed alternative

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using a bio psycho social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty

  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Wide range of specialist and sub specialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service

  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients
