Speciality Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry - Moorgate and Aldgate Wards

This 10 PA Specialty Doctor post is within the Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) part of the Forensic Directorate of the East London Foundation NHS Trust. One post is available, based at the John Howard Centre, 12 Kenworthy Road, London E9 5TD. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day care for patients on two wards and will be supported with shared office facilities at the John Howard Centre. The post is expected to comprise 8 PAs of Direct Clinical Care and 2 PAs of Supporting Professional Activity.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work as a Specialty Doctor on Moorgate and Aldgate Wards, with cross-cover expected for holidays and absences. Responsibilities include managing inpatients through mental state examinations, physical health reviews, medication reviews, observations, admissions, reports, and discharges. Some patients require specialist observation in seclusion, and participation in secluded patient reviews is expected. Opportunities may arise to liaise with prisons and courts. Attendance at ward rounds and CPA review meetings is required. A key duty involves preparing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals, Manager's Hearings, and other meetings. The role also includes participation in treatment programs and unit activities such as academic sessions, supervision, community meetings, and events.

Job responsibilities

Please see the attached Job Description. The role involves delivering high-quality medical care to patients detained under the Mental Health Act in a medium secure learning disability inpatient service.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management
  • MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Section 12 approval
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at the time of appointment
  • In good standing with GMC regarding warnings and conditions on practice
Experience
  • Completed Core Training or equivalent experience and competencies post medical training
  • Experience in a secure setting or working with long-term psychiatric conditions
  • Experience in forensic learning disability
Clinical Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken in English
  • Proficiency in electronic record keeping
  • Sound knowledge and ability to prioritize clinical needs
  • Skills in history taking, mental and physical examinations, and developing care plans
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Understanding of audit, quality improvement, and research principles in psychiatry
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Stress management skills and professional conduct in difficult situations
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and cultural sensitivity
  • Empathy and effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of rapid tranquilization and psychiatric emergency management
  • Psychological-mindedness, including psychodynamic formulation and group work experience
