Job Description
Overview Specialist Medical Engineer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 08 February 2026.

Note on transfer arrangements: on 1st March 2026, Estates and Facilities Services for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will transfer to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and become part of OneLSC. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust will be the Lead Provider of the service and the employer of colleagues working within the service, across sites. If you are successful in your application and commence work prior to 1st March 2026, your employment will transfer to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust on 1st March 2026 under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, 2006. We are searching for an exceptional Engineer to join our extraordinary team and support clinical services within the hospital. Main duties of the job Our department is ISO9001:2015 accredited and manages over 36,000 medical devices. Our team works to deliver top-quality care for our patients.

As a member of our highly skilled team, you will conduct acceptance testing, deliver planned maintenance, and repair a diverse range of medical equipment in various clinical divisions. Your role is crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of this equipment, minimizing downtime and prioritising patient safety at all times. With extensive knowledge in medical engineering and strong technical experience, you will be a valuable asset to our team. Job responsibilities
  • Communicate and develop relationships with a range of organisations and technical and clinical staff on adverse incidents, investigations and day-to-day issues.
  • Explain configurations of users' computer / microprocessor based equipment and configure it to operate appropriately and safely for their areas/tasks.
  • Develop relationships with medical equipment manufacturers and suppliers to obtain best value and quality of products and services.
  • Liaise with external contractors to request repairs and repair quotations.
  • Communicate with and advise clinical and technical staff on medical equipment regarding purchase, use, training, replacement, research etc.
  • Prioritise and negotiate with other Health Care Professionals to obtain access to medical equipment for maintenance.
Developing oneself and others within the Trust
  • Train junior Medical Engineers and take responsibility for their work when they are operating under the post holder's direction.
  • When appropriate, train clinical staff across the Trust in the function, operation and day-to-day maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Attend technical training courses as required, including hardware, software, clinical, management or mandatory training.
  • Brief clinical staff across the Trust in the function, operation and day-to-day maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Support colleagues by providing technical information and training on devices where appropriate and sharing knowledge gained from technical and clinical courses where required.
  • Undertake CPD to update own technical knowledge of specialized equipment and its clinical use.
Health and Safety
  • Be aware of and contribute to health, safety and security of self and others. Act independently, safely, promptly and efficiently in all situations with patients, colleagues and contractors.
  • Take appropriate precautions when working with heavy loads.
  • Follow departmental guidelines to ensure safety when working on open live electrical equipment, equipment with high pressures, high voltage capacitors, dangerous mechanical parts, dangerous RF / microwave fields, powerful light / laser outputs, dangerous radiation levels or hazardous chemicals and in the patient environment.
  • Undertake duties with regard to infection control risks.
  • Seek to minimise patient risk in all circumstances.
Service Improvement
  • Organise loan equipment from service providers when repairs cannot be achieved within a desired time scale, or in incident situations, to enable patient services to be maintained.
  • Attend regular meetings with Medical Engineering Management to improve departmental performance.
  • Undertake project work where appropriate.
  • Be involved in creating and updating written procedures for performance and functional verification of medical devices.
Quality
  • Work unsupervised to Professional Standards in compliance with Department of Health guidelines, regulatory standards and departmental procedures.
  • Use technical expertise to identify potentially hazardous symptoms and faults and act to ensure safety. In conjunction with senior staff, report novel fault conditions to manufacturers and the MHRA.
  • Collate details of notifiable incidents, quarantine equipment and accessories, submit reports to MHRA and liaise with manufacturers and hospital staff in investigations.
  • Be responsible for the quality of your work and follow department procedures and published guidance.
  • Highlight and bring to the attention of the Manager any deficiencies in the quality of work.
  • Analyse the impact of equipment maintenance on service provision and work to minimise detrimental effects.
  • Follow departmental procedures and seek advice when unsure.

Systems, vehicles and equipment
  • Carry out regular maintenance, calibration, function checking and electrical safety testing of a wide range of medical equipment to ensure safety and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.
  • Prioritise planned preventative maintenance and medical equipment breakdown requests to ensure maintenance is up to date and repairs are made promptly.
  • Acceptance testing / commissioning of new equipment to ensure it is as ordered, electrically safe, meets manufacturer specifications and MHRA guidelines and is CE marked.
  • Test equipment upon return from external repair and before release to users.
  • Act independently in response to emergency and unpredictable situations.
  • Participate in rotas and attend to urgent repairs, returning completed equipment to users.
  • Assist users with potentially faulty equipment that may still be attached to the patient, where necessary.
  • Take part in the departmental on-call rota covering all medical devices in the Trust.
  • Preserve/back up patient data and event histories before maintenance where possible.
  • Assess urgency of requests and provide high-quality, prompt service, keeping users informed.
  • Apply specialised fault-finding techniques and repairs to component level where needed.
  • Take responsibility for tools and equipment and help maintain workshop facilities.
  • Act as Lead engineer in one or more Specialist areas of Medical Engineering and review areas to meet staff development and service needs.
  • Advise on loan equipment during trials and ensure future maintainability.
  • Maintain competency across devices to enable coverage for other engineers.
  • Apply knowledge of IT and cybersecurity in securing patient data and Trust IT networks.
Procurement and commissioning
  • Raise orders for spare parts and repairs, handle financial queries related to price verification and delivery of goods and services.
  • Ensure stocks of components and spare parts stay above agreed levels.
  • Liaise with, supervise and work with external service contractors.
Information processing
  • Ensure clinical information/event history on computer-based systems is backed up before maintenance.
Person Specification Knowledge & Experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of Managing Medical Devices 2015, CE marking, British/European standards for medical equipment.
  • Solid knowledge of basic scientific, clinical, physiological, computing and Medical Engineering principles.
  • Significant experience maintaining a wide range of medical equipment.
