Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of the Director of Special Education, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; document teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; support students who are in need of homebound/hospitalized services. Coordinate services with district colleagues, residential program staff, virtual platform contacts, relevant resident district staff, and parents regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
Essential Performance Responsibilities- Develop and administer curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Coordinate all instruction and assignments with the teacher of record.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize instruction time.
- Demonstrate ability to differentiate instruction, using a variety of styles, and inspire mixed culture and ability classes by creating challenging and engaging learning opportunities.
- Teach all required subject matter as assigned to the grade level, which may include reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual or small group instruction as needed.
- Instruct students in responsible citizenship principles and other subject matter specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the Kentwood Public Schools.
- Acquire and maintain professional knowledge of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior needed for a functional learning environment.
- Coordinate with other professional staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
- Demonstrate an understanding of working with standards.
- Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Travel RequirementsTravel to school district buildings, residential programs, student residences, and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work to manage an evolving caseload.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others involved in the work.

- Understanding of a learning styles approach to instruction and respect for students' multiple intelligences.
- Knowledge and understanding of Personal Curriculum or willingness to learn.
- Working knowledge of homebound and hospitalized guidelines.
- Ability to use a variety of virtual platforms as identified by the district.

- Work Environment: Noise level is usually loud to moderate.
- Mental Functions: Compare, analyze, communicate orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
- Special Education endorsement in EI/CI and/or LD.
- Meet State of Michigan Professional Development requirement.
- Knowledge of research based interventions for special needs students.
- Knowledge of Response to Intervention.
- Knowledge of behavior support strategies.
- Knowledge of components of nonviolent crisis intervention.
- Current CPI certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Previous experience teaching these programs.
- EL certification or experience working with EL students preferred.
