We are seeking a skilled Software Development Engineer with strong experience in PHP, Python, VBA, and advanced Excel (macros and complex formulas) to support, maintain, and enhance software and automation systems critical to the operation of laboratory instrumentation and data analytics. Based in and around Uttoxeter, this role plays a vital part in ensuring precision and accuracy in gas measurement processes by delivering robust software solutions. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with automated interfaces, data handling, and process automation within technical or laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the maintenance and development of automated software interfaces for gas chromatographs and other instrumentation within UK-based calibration and testing laboratories.

• Maintain deep technical knowledge of relevant software and standard automation interfaces to support the creation of best practice documentation and protocols for use across service offerings.

• Lead the design, commissioning, and testing of innovative measurement methods to enhance automation, increase efficiency, and maintain accuracy in calibration and testing workflows.

• Create robust testing strategies and documentation for all software development activities, including automated testing tools, detailed test plans, and comprehensive reporting.

• Ensure all internally developed software is properly documented, maintained, and updated in line with current engineering standards.

• Apply software engineering principles to design solutions that align with developments in international standards for gas metrology.

• Manage software configuration and licensing related to Chromatography Data Systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

• Demonstrated experience developing automated software interfaces using PHP, Python, VBA, and advanced Excel (including macros and complex formulas).

• Ability to write clean, maintainable, and idiomatic code in line with current best practices.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective engagement with team members, stakeholders, and external partners.

• Excellent organisational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks independently or as part of a team.
