Site Volunteer- Royal Garrison Church, Portsmouth

Royal Garrison Church was built in about 1212 by the Bishop of Winchester as part of a hospital and hostel for pilgrims. Used as an ammunition store after the Reformation, it became part of the governor of Portsmouth's house during Elizabeth I's reign. The church was restored in the 19th century, and although the nave was badly damaged in a 1941 firebomb raid on Portsmouth, the chancel is still roofed and furnished. Fine 20th-century stained-glass windows depict scenes from the Second World War and from the church's own history.

We are looking for new team members to join our volunteers to help us provide a presentable site and to deliver a warm and friendly welcome to visitors.

As a member of the volunteer team for Royal Garrison Church, you will help English Heritage care and ensure that the Church is safe and ready to open for our visitors to enjoy!

If you have a passion for history and storytelling you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and bring to the life the story of Royal Garrison Church with visitors of all ages.

As part of the team, you will also have the opportunity to help us with an exciting and varied programme of events that we host at the Church which will bring the benefit of engaging the local community and spread awareness of the Church.

The Church is open Friday and Saturday 11-4, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 1-4, April - October. Sessions are flexible and are open to discussion at any stage.

We are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments we can provide for you. We will provide you with a uniform, national, site and role inductions as welcome you to the team.
