Job Description

Site Geologist Nationwide role with varied UK projects, £32K-£37K salary and chartership support

Opportunity

We are looking for a practical, organised and safety conscious geologist with previous UK ground investigation experience to join one of the UK's leading ground investigation and ground engineering businesses. This nationwide, site based position involves supervising and delivering ground investigation projects across the UK, working with experienced geologists, engineers, drilling teams and project managers to ensure site investigations are completed safely, accurately and in accordance with project requirements.

Role

As Site Geologist you will support and supervise ground investigation activities across the UK, working closely with drilling teams, site supervisors, project managers, subcontractors and laboratory providers to deliver fieldwork safely, efficiently and to technical standards. Frequent travel and overnight stays may be required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise ground investigation works on sites across the UK
  • Assist with mobilisation and set up of investigation sites
  • Liaise with drilling crews, project managers, clients and subcontractors
  • Monitor site activities, maintain accurate records and logs, and report progress
  • Support safe and efficient delivery of site investigation works and ensure samples are correctly labelled, recorded and stored
Ground Investigation Techniques
  • Supervise intrusive investigation techniques: cable percussion, rotary, sonic drilling, window sampling, dynamic probing, trial pits, in situ testing and geophysical surveys
  • Assist with groundwater and ground gas monitoring, and support installation of monitoring wells and standpipes
  • Record groundwater strikes and related site observations
Geological Logging & Sampling
  • Undertake soil and rock logging, describe and classify samples, prepare borehole, trial pit and window sample logs
  • Select samples for laboratory testing, manage laboratory schedules and review field records
Technical & Reporting Support
  • Process field data and laboratory results, assist in preparation of ground investigation reports
  • Contribute to site plans, schedules, photographs and technical appendices
  • Support office based project work between site assignments and assist with Phase 1 desk studies when required
Health, Safety, Environment & Quality
  • Follow company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures
  • Attend site inductions, daily briefings and ensure compliance with risk assessments and method statements
  • Conduct site checks, report unsafe conditions and support delivery of projects in accordance with legislation and industry standards
About You

Practical, organised, safety conscious geologist with previous UK ground investigation experience, confident supervising drilling activities and logging soil/rock samples. Strong communication, attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a wider project team.

Essential Requirements
  • Previous UK ground investigation site experience
  • Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience, Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience supervising intrusive ground investigation works
  • Ability to log soil and rock samples to current geotechnical standards
  • Understanding of UK soil and rock strata, geological maps and published information
  • Basic understanding of groundwater and ground gas monitoring
  • Strong written and verbal communication, accurate record keeping, independent work ability
  • Full UK driving licence, willingness to travel nationwide and undertake overnight stays when required
Desirable Experience
  • Experience supervising cable percussion, rotary, sonic or window sampling investigations
  • Preparing laboratory testing schedules and knowledge of geotechnical/environmental sampling procedures
  • Assisting with factual ground investigation reports, CSCS card, CAT and Genny training, manual handling, first aid or other site qualifications
  • Working on infrastructure, energy, residential or commercial projects, working towards professional membership or Chartership
