Sister/ Charge Nurse

As a Band 6 nurse on Ward B2 you will be responsible for the general co-ordination of the ward including safe and efficient patient flow. You will be expected to lead by example, promoting a teamworking approach helping to ensure that we consistently deliver high quality, safe and effective care.

Ward B2 is a busy 26 bedded discharge ward providing care for patients with a range of chronic conditions, complex comorbidities and social concerns. We care for people who are medically optimised for discharge but are awaiting services in the community to aid discharge.

Main duties of the job

As the Band 6 nurse on Ward B2 you will coordinate the ward whilst also managing a small group of patients. Your duties will include tasks fundamental to ward-based nursing such as obtaining vitals and administering medications as developed within your previous roles.

You will be expected to utilise excellent communication and leadership skills to maintain an oversight of the ward. Where required coordinating the efforts of staff to ensure that care is prioritised appropriately by the team and that discharges are facilitated in a way that is timely, safe and effective.

As a Band 6 you will help to provide assurance that Safety and Quality of practice on the ward are being maintained by completing of a number of band 6 tasks including daily checks, audits, reviews of staffing levels, PSIRF investigations and action plans.

You will be expected to have excellent problem-solving skills; the ability to resolve conflict and the confidence to professionally challenge and elevate any concerns they come across in a timely manner.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • First level on part 1 of the NMC register, educated to diploma /degree level.
  • Evidence of on-going professional development. Compliant with Mandatory Training.
  • Diploma/degree in relevant area of practice.
  • Hold Mentorship Qualification -Practice Assessor Role
  • Currently / recently undertaking further educational study to nursing practice / management including clinical leadership
  • To hold or to be working towards achieving a relevant qualification.
  • has or willing to worl towards Advanced life support qualification
Experience
  • Experience caring for patients within an Acute Hospital Setting.
  • Understanding of WHH Trust Values and Mission.
  • Experience supporting students or new staff.
  • Experience in caring for vulnerable adults and understanding of issues in respect of Safeguarding, Dementia care/MCA/ DOLS/Child Protection.
  • Previous Band 6 or Team Leader Experience.
  • Experience of working closely with external care providers to ensure that patients are directed to the right sort of support and services available to them.
Skills, knowledge and competencies
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, management, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of leading and motivating a team.
  • Demonstrates a flexible approach and able to respond effectively to the demands of a constantly developing service.
  • Ability to liaise with the multidisciplinary team, making recommendations to enhance the smooth running and management of ward.
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake effective and timely discharge planning.
  • Representing the ward manager in their absence.
  • Ability to manage self and others in delivery of own work and related clinical outcomes to meet the department's expectations.
  • Ability to use negotiation skills.
Physical skills
  • Polite, approachable, professional manner.
  • Confident & able to act as patient advocate.
  • Understanding risk management, health & safety and clinical governance.
  • Computer literate & willingness to teach others data systems.
  • Understand expenditure and budget management.
