We are currently seeking enthusiastic and conscientious Signalling Design Verifiers and Senior Verifiers to join our rail Signalling Business in the UK, as part of our Signalling Schemes Development team in York. AtkinsRéalis offers flexibility in location and options for hybrid (home / office) working arrangements to suit individuals' personal circumstances. As part of AtkinsRéalis Signalling Business you will have the opportunity to develop your design skills and experience across all phases of project delivery including feasibility, option selection, single option development, detailed design and in support of installation, testing and project close out. The breadth and complexity of project opportunities within AtkinsRéalis is vast. We have teams delivering designs for major resignalling schemes, such as the Feltham re-signalling programme, using the latest interlocking and control systems technologies and our "Advanced Signalling Method" (ASM) delivery process. You may also support the delivery of multi-disciplinary design packages for station enhancements, track renewals, level crossing upgrades and smaller consultancy remits. Your past experience will be valued, and you will be given the opportunity to maximise your potential.

Your Purpose
  • Holds a current IRSE Signalling Principles Designer License (1.1.550) and Signalling Design Verifier License (1.1.160).
  • Substantial mainline signalling principles design experience, including knowledge of UK railway standards, processes and procedures at outline design / scheme development stages.
  • Design verification experience across a range of project phases, systems and technologies.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to the delivery of signalling designs to the highest standards of safety and quality with an understanding of risk assessment / hazard identification, management and mitigation throughout the signalling design process.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and maintenance of up-to-date design skills, experience and training records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written English) and collaborate with team members, clients and other stakeholders as necessary.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Proficient in the use of industry standard CAD packages and signalling design tools for the development of signalling scheme development (e.g. Bentley MicroStation).
  • Work package management / experience leading design projects.
  • Experience and/or qualification in Signal Overrun Risk Assessment.
  • Experience and/or qualification in Signal Sighting.
  • Familiarity with modern electronic document management systems (e.g. ProjectWise).
  • Experience of undertaking signalling surveys, including knowledge of a broad range of lineside equipment and technologies.
  • HNC/HND/Degree level qualifications in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • PTS holder.
Key Responsibilities and Opportunities

The primary function of the role is to provide design delivery support in day-to-day duties during the project lifecycle, from inception to Approval In Principle, including:

  • Verification of railway signalling designs specifications and reports. Role may also include production duties, applying first principles as required.
  • Ensure all deliverables verified/produced comply with company procedures, contractual and statutory requirements, including delivery within agreed timescales and performance parameters.
  • Liaising and meeting with others including clients, stakeholders and external railway contractors.
  • Mentoring, support, guidance and development of junior staff.
  • Technical liaison with other team disciplines, departments and externally with the wider AtkinsRéalis organisation.
Staff Development

Staff are expected to not only maintain/renew their existing skills and competencies but also commit to continuing personal development. Opportunities to develop will be provided, including:

  • Support for IRSE licence category 'progression' with in-house workplace and competence assessments.
  • Opportunities to obtain secondary competencies (e.g. testing qualifications).
  • Support, mentorship and project-based experience to facilitate working towards senior design management/CRE roles or engineering management roles within the signalling business.
  • Internal and external training courses to support professional development (e.g. towards IRSE examinations).
