Circa £26,000 per annum (full time equivalent salary) depending on experience

Based at our offices in Cardiff

We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented Shipping Customs Clerk to join our growing team here at BAY Shipping on a permanent basis to manage import and export documentation and ensure compliance with all customs regulations. The ideal candidate will coordinate with freight forwarders, carriers, customs authorities, and colleagues to facilitate timely clearance of goods and maintain accurate records.

Normal working hours are 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday to be worked between the hours of 8.30am-5.30pm.

Role

As a Shipping Customs Clerk, you will be responsible for preparing and processing shipping documentation, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, and coordinating with freight carriers and government agencies to facilitate smooth import and export operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review, and submit import and export documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, customs declarations, etc.)
  • Make sure shipments comply with local, national, and international trade laws and customs regulations.
  • Classify goods, assign correct tariff/HS codes and determine duties, taxes, and applicable fees.
  • Accurately determine payable duties, VAT, excise, and other charges.
  • Submit entries electronically and coordinate with customs authorities for clearance.
  • Monitor changes in customs laws, trade agreements, and tariff schedules.
  • Communicate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, suppliers, and government agencies.
  • Address delays, documentation discrepancies, inspections, and holds.
  • Maintain accurate records for auditing and compliance purposes.
  • Monitor shipments to ensure timely customs clearance and delivery.
About you
  • Previous experience in shipping, logistics, or customs processing preferred
  • Knowledge of import/export regulations and trade documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and shipping software systems
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work within a small team
